The Apocalypse. End Of Days. God's Do Over.
Whatever you want to call it or whatever you might believe in...this is the magical year it is said to occur. Who said it? Well, the Mayans of course. Those zany ancients with the wacky calendar and sense of humor to go with it. To whit...
December 21st, 2012 or if you like...12.21.12. Ahhhh, I remember my first concert was Rush's 2112. Was that a precursor of the Apocalypse? Or was it simply Geddy Lee getting his nuts crushed not unlike the grapes of wrath? Those high notes in Temples of Syrinx speak to the latter. I believe I have wandered a bit off course (which to those who frequent this space is nothing unusual).
Okay, more on point, the debate over what may happen on that date is ranging from the pessimistic "nothing" to the optimistic "zombie apocalypse". All those who loved Zombieland (and Bill Murray specifically) raise your hands. You may sit down. There are many streams of thought in between. Solar flares (brought to you by the new rap group EMP). Social unrest (so Egyptian). Nuclear war in the middle east (damn you ahmadinejad!). Financial collapse (Buffet would kill for a Cheesburger In Paradise about now). Or mass suicide via the demise of Facebook ("can't update my status, oh life's not worth living").
If you are on the "nothing" side of the fence then you are missing out on a year of fun that you will never see again...no matter what happens (or doesn't). This is a great time to get creative. Wrap your head around this concept...money making opportunity abounds for those shrewd enough to go for it. Then if everything goes to hell (or not) it will have been a complete waste of time...yet those who believe the end is here will spend the most freely!! Kind of blows your mind when you get right down to it. Better take a break and get it together...
There, feeling a little better now? Good. Let's continue...
Throughout this A-Z Challenge I am going to interject apocalyptic posts with some abstract material. Mainly because I can't make up my mind and get distracted real easy...and I like weirdness from time to time.
I don't know what is going to happen in December. If I were still a betting man (and used waaay fewer parenthesis) I would say my trip home for Christmas is not in danger. But there's that little irrational voice in the back of my head saying, "yeah, but what if the Mayans really were visited by aliens?" Wha - What?? Yuup, thoughts of the Alien Apocalypse are now dancing in your head, am I right? Now this is a possibility. Edgar Cayce has always scared the shit out of me with that stuff. And it seems there is plenty of evidence when you read his works. Who knows...maybe THAT'S the end.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy my humble contributions to the A-Z Challenge. With so many great and articulate writers in the mix I'll be gald if you just make it to the end of my posts!
I know one thing...I am not going to any partys this year that feature Koolaid! Any flavor...
May the force be with you...til tomorrow.

That's awesome, Chuck! Wish I could say Rush's 2112 was my first concert.
I like the cartoon :)
Happy a to Z (day 1)
I swear I didn't copy your post.
Anyway, I'm liking your start to the challenge. I hope that the approach of 12.21.12 will open up the job market due to the panic of people making their last minute preparations.
very cool theme going on here! Look forward to reading you more - nice to meet you
Lx
I like the cartoon! ;-p
I saw a programme recently about the calendar stone where they said the reason for the projected date in December this year is down to the fact that the stone was fractured at that point - maybe it isn't 'the end' after all!
I'm keeping an open mind - but so many predictions have been wrong already!
(incidently, I'm just slogging my way through Steve Alten's fictional work "The Mayan Prophecy". It was creepily feasible - until he started describing alien beings and it all became a bit 'B-movie'-esque, but I have to finish it!)
Chuck, I am so fascinated by this kind of thing. BTW if you can't make up your mind, you must be a Libra like me!
Oh the Maya. There's a PBS show on new discoveries.

Alex: It really a grand show. Lots of pyro and LOUD!!!
Baygirl: You're a fan of the Dilbert calendar too??
Chiz: No worries it was an easy one for several people to pick as a beginning point. Wait til you see my D post!
Laura: Theme? You found a theme here? I have been looking for one for three months and finally gave up. But it should be an enjoyable month anyway. Thanks for stopping by, hope to see you again.
Sue: I am going to have to check out that book for sure...aliens and all!
Monti: Well not every post this month will be along that line but many will. Not a Libra though...pure Gemini. I have been watching a few shows on A&E and NatGeo about Mayans
Hi love your start to the challenge and also loved the little joke. I have my A up but dont think its as interesting as yours lol

Great theme! I'm looking forward to more. I'm afraid I never saw Rush in concert.
Oh my gosh, another lover of Alice In Chains!! I just spent the last six days driving through the Arizona desert listening to every AIC song on my son's iPod. He's 17 & loves them. Maybe that's because I played nothing but AIC during his first 3 years of life. Poor kid! Great taste.
Oh and btw - it's nice to meet you. I'm a new follower via the A to Z.
Freaky! I don't think much will happen on that day. But, I've been wrong before.
Let your humor shine. We need it. I,too, have been a student of Cayce's most of my adult life and he's never been found to be incorrect. A couple of times they thought he was wrong but he was given the wrong information. A little scary, huh? Looking forward to you posts.
I love these world-ending thoughts. I am guessing soon one of them will HAVE to be right, right?
:~)
Looking forward to getting to know you better via the #AtoZChallenge!

Well...I for one believe in Granny Mayan's prediction - she did mention to me, long ago, that "the family" would be back for me...I just never knew it would take this long.
Great post! I'll be back (and I won't be coming alone) :)

I'm kind of an apocalypse geek. So I love your blog already.
That was an explosive start to the Challenge, Chuck. Excellently executed and true to your blog's theme. I'm looking forward to much more, with optimism that greater forces (or lesser, e.g., facebook) won't intervene before then to curb it all.

Terrific read...of course, I always enjoy coming here for the intellectual being that you really are. And don't try to sway me differently. Pshaw...you keep writing your deep thoughts and I'll continue to make sure I visit when I can find time...usually on Sunday. Hmmmmm, what day is December 21st anyway? Is that a Sunday?
Just remember, like oil and water, Aliens and Mayans don't mix. I am right, I know...so I'll make sure I stop by on the 22nd. [If the computers are working] :::snort:::
PS...nope, not doing that A-Z stuff.
Jilly: Thanks for that. I'm going to hop over and check out your A...you know what I mean right?
Ciara: Thanks for stopping by. They were spectacular back in the late 70's. I look forward to visiting your site.
Nancy: Did it really take 6 days to drive through the desert or were you just trying to get all the songs in! I am sure you raised him right...musically! I'll be stopping by shortly. Thanks for joining the wacky trainride I provide.
Clarissa: Yeah it's going to be a weird year with a lot of people going back and forth with every world event. Will it or won't it?
Manzanita: A kindred spirit in Cayce. I am glad to find one. Enjoy the challenge.
Julie: Yes you are right...it's called the "due theory". I'll be by your site shortly.
Pearson: Seriously? You are part of "the family"? Well I'll be coming to see you and I'm bringing my dogs!
Stephanie: Join this geek squad at your own peril (we love the company)...the clay picture kind of creeps me out a little...then again so did Chucky!
Robyn: My dear Robyn, so glad to hear from you. Thanks for the positive words but then again you are chocolately sweet, right?
Anni: Sorry it's a Friday! Could ruin the whole weekend. I thought the aliens raised the Mayans?? Or maybe the Egyptians. I think oyu would be fantastic in the A-Z. I'll still stop by when I can this month.
I'm not worried; back when the Mayans made their "prediction" our calendar didn't yet have leap days. Factor those in, and the world was supposed to end some time last year.
But if the world is to end in 2012, I say it'll be because someone tries to collide two Large Hadron Colliders.
Hahaha yeah... so many possibilities. And all of them unlikely. It's a beautiful thing.
Did I ever mention I'm a snarky cynic?
Nice start Chuck!
I look at it like this...
If the Mayans were so damn smart, how come they don't have a casino?
I like how you put the ones predicting an apocalypse in the optimistic category. I hear the Mayan descendants are laughing hysterically at us, but I'm cool with that. How many times do we get to wait to see what horrible end will come to us? Will it be the computer and AI taking over? Machinageddon? Zombies? You heard about the illness striking children in Africa that strongly resembles zombism (which is incredibly sad, by the way, but also quite frightening)? So many ways we could go! This is a year to watch lots of Day After Tomorrow and 2012. However, unlike the people who follow a certain reverend, I will not be spending all my money. I'll save that for wood fire when the apocalypse comes and I have no more heat...it'll be December, after all!

Nate: You're not going to be a Mayan buzz-kill are ya?? Oh BTW, aren't colliders supposed to collide, duh?
Misha: No worries, it takes cynics to make the fantasy more appealing. And you may use that line whenever you like.
Pat: Now you have given me an idea...I may start a casino while I am in Belize, you may never hear from me again...ha ha ha!
Shannon: I LOVE Machinageddon...can I use that?? I'm going to I think...stay tuned.
