Today's Apocalypse Sign: Kinkade, Thomas - Dead At 54

Thomas Kinkade known as "The Painter Of Light", died at his home in Los Gatos, California on Friday. He was 54 years old.

Kinkade was known for his lighting and mood style of painting. It is estimated that 1 of every 20 homes in America has one of his paintings hanging in it. He was one of the most beloved and collected artists of our time.

Quote from his website:

"I try to create paintings that are a window for the imagination," Kinkade said on his website. "If people look at my work and are reminded of the way things once were or perhaps the way they could be, then I've done my job."

It is reported that his Media Arts Group took in $128 million 10 years ago from over 4500 dealers around the country. He went private during the middle of the last decade. Many of his paintings are priced from several hundred dollars to over $10,000.

Kinkade's paintings feature Disney scenes, outdoors, churches, cottages, town scenes, and bridges.

Here are just a few examples of his incredible work:

His online gallery is filled with these brilliant works. There are some free screen savers as well. You can see by looking at these pictures how he earned his nickname "Painter Of Light". We will all miss his talent.

I should have bought one of these sooner. Now the price will skyrocket.

Has anyone heard of Kinkade? Do you have any of his art? Are you a fan of this style of painting? Leave a comment and share your thoughts.

I am not a fan of his style, but he was certainly very talented. May he rest in peace.

Fifty-four is way too young. Kind of hits close to home, doesn't it?

Nope, not much of a fan (I'm more into abstract and expressionist art), but his management of light is indeed something to be celebrated. I remember him from a storybook he illustrated (many, many years ago), and I'm sorry to hear he passed.

Wow, those are some inredible paintings. Also, you should submit this post to a local newspaper or magazine.

I've heard of him and seen copies of his work - his title of 'painter of light' is truly justified.

wow! This guy's art is EVERYWHERE! Dead at 54, that really sucks...
I had no idea that he lived in Los Gatos. It is one of the most amazing towns in California that nobody has heard of.

MA: Thanks for the visit. His style feels very homey to me...not normaly something a collector or critic would be looking for...not enough to read into it or try and interpret.

Alex: Really close to home.

Guilie: Thanks for opinion and stopping by again.

Chiz: This is already all over th news and internet. Since my local paper is the Dallas Morning News...already done.

Sue: Thanks!

Pat: Yeah as Alex said it hits way to close to home. I have heard Los Gatos was a cool town. If I ever get back to Cal I'll have to put it on the list.

I loved his work at first. Then I was influenced by his drop in popularity/bad press. I shouldn't have been; I'm not even sure why. Lived not too far from him and it's a tragic loss.

I know of his work and have seen it displayed and even on cards. I am not a fan of his style, but he was a brilliant artist. How tragic for him to die at such a young age.

I am a new follower from the challenge. I love you A to Z calendar. Maybe if I had been smart enough to place one on my sidebar, I wouldn't be running a day late. and a letter short(I forgot we had to post last Saturday). I am also a huge fan of The Dude, I see on your sidebar.

I've seen his artwork and he's very talented. How tragic that he died so young. Alex sent me over and I'm glad he did. Julie

Hi Chuck .. finally got here - to read this sad demise. What an amazing artist to have achieved so much .. to me - he's too chocolate boxy, but I can understand his appeal .. and the 'light' comments.

54 is very young .. sorry for his family and friends .. I've never heard of him - but I guess somewhere along the line I'll have seen his work.

Cheers and have a good weekend .. Hilary

Kinkade's paintings are beautiful . . and I don't own any but I remember when they were on sale at one of the local shopping malls for inexpensive prices.

I've always loved his work, but I've never bought one. Like you, I'm sort of regretting that now. They were already up there in price, but now it will be crazy!
