If you are new to the series, I would seriously recommend you pick up CassaStar and CassaFire and get up to speed before September. You can pick both of them up at Amazon on Kindle for less than $10 total. A steal of a deal!!
These are good stories that happen to be in the science fiction genre. Even if you are not a die-hard "sci-fi" devotee, these books tell a great story and are a riveting read. Alex is a first rate story teller and the best compliment I can give his books is that I was truly not ready for them to end.
