Today's Apocalypse Sign: More Of Spongebob's World

I thought I would share a few more of my wife's underwater photo results. These are a couple things that you need to watch out for when diving. They look harmless enough but both can put a hurt on ya that you don't want. These shots are from her Bahamas trip in June of 09. She was having some trouble with her strobe that trip and was a little bummed she didn't get more and better shots, but these turned out okay.

The underwater world is not all the cartoon that Spongebob makes it out to be...have a look: (enlarge for best viewing)

Long-Spined Urchin
Effect on divers: Spines easily puncture the skin and break off in the flesh
causing a painful wound. The embedded spines give off a purple dye, causing
a slight discoloration under the skin. Treat are for infection; embedded spines
will dissolve within a few days. Victim with numerous wounds may need
treatment for shock. These mothers hurt!!!

We believe we have identified this as a Goldentail Moray Eel. They are extremely
hard to photograph well due to the fact they are usually hiding in crevices of the reef.
Patience and a steady hand is the best way to be rewarded with a photo. Usually
requires many shots to get some thing decent.

These eels are not normally aggressive but do have teeth and a fairly
strong bite. You can lose a finger if you approach too close and they choose
to not retreat into the reef.

Just hanging out

Now the Green Moray Eel looks little more menacing here. This one
actually was about 4 feet long and swam straight for my wife! Freaked
her out a bit I might say. A customer of hers is missing a finger from when
he foolishly reached out to touch one. They bite and do not let go!

Today's Apocalypse Sign: Darth Vader Bank Robber

I am not sure the force (of common sense) is with this guy. How do you run down the street after robbing a bank in broad daylight with a Darth Vader outfit?? And no light saber is just plain stupid.

Glad I keep my money under my mattress...ah, no, I really don't, just kidding. Don't come to my house Darth, I will light you up!

Today's Apocalypse Sign: Kids and Coffee

How can caffeinating your kids not be a good thing? Let's examine the effects:

1. They could help around the house instead of napping.

2. They would pay more attention in school and get better grades.

3. Could stay up later and get their homework done.

4. Would be a much cheaper substitute for Ritalin.

Yeah, for sure all those would happen...not!

Kids are already amped up enough these days with all the garbage they are fed in schools and at fast food hang-outs. Red dye No.32 is all they need now. Do we really need them MORE aggitated? Next we will have little caffeine gangs of 7 and 8 year olds knocking over old folks in the park for coffee money. And they'll be skipping school to hang at the local Starbucks. Is this where society is headed??

The video shows these darling little kids getting a special (decaf) coffee treat once or twice a week from their parents. As with most things I am sure they are only showing the nice side of this. There is no doubt these kids will (if not already) be getting the hard stuff before long.

Now excuse me, I have to go hide my designer coffee in my safe...just in case.

Today's Apocalypse Sign: Dead Squirrel Beer, Only $765 Per Bottle

There are some things that are truly beyond belief...and this is one of them. As you will see in this video nothing is ever too "far out" to take to market. But then again how can anything with the name The End Of History, NOT make this page! If you have an extra $765 you too can own a limited edition (only 12 bottles made) of Brew Dog's finest roadkill encased ale.

Drink up and enjoy! Video takes a few seconds to load (even the announcer stumbles a little over this story).

Yeah, those squirrels really look like they have been run over, right.

Today's Apocalypse Sign: One More Round Of The Monday Minute

Rock and roll for another Monday Night!

1. Who is your "what-if" person?
Not sure I really understand the question, wait, "what if, I don't understand the question?" Pretty deep, huh? Okay, (deep breath)...what if I hadn't turned my head to say something to the girl I was seeing at the time while I was driving only to look back just in time to slam into a coyote at 80 mph as it tried to cross the road, ruining the front end of my brand new Miata with only 4000 miles on it.

That "what if" bitch.

2. What is your nickname?
Sometimes it's Genius (like, "Hey, Genius") but mostly just Asshole (as in, "You Asshole!").

3. If you could choose how you died, how would you like to die?
It would be last...when the earth swallows itself. Hey, 2012 is right around the corner. Still wanna be last!

4. If you could have named yourself, which name would you have picked?
Grand O. Gasm

5. Who were you named after or for what reason did your parents choose your name?
Come on it was the fifties...Charles was the "in" name...look it up! Besides, it means King so bow down before the one you serve...yeah they could have named me Trent Resnor, right?

Today's Apocalypse Sign: Photography Conundrum

Since several people who read my blog are accomplished photographers, I thought I would ask for a little input.

As my wife has become a more accomplished scuba diver/instructor, her underwater pictures have become rather impressive. Because I am, of course, quite bias (and also hyper-critical of my own photography skills) I think in the short time she has been diving and photographing the great underwater world...I believe she is currently creating better work underwater than I have above water.

Taking pictures underwater involves all the things you do above water, but also consider that you are encumbered with an air bladder vest, a tank of air, a mask over your face, a dive computer strapped to your wrist to monitor depth, air usage, dive time, etc., a bulky enclosure around the camera and an attached strobe...not to mention you have to have virtually perfect bouyancy! You also have to be patient for many of your subjects to get used to you and not just swim away or disappear into a hole. Movements have to be slow and deliberate so as not to scare the critters or stir up the sand and loose stuff that creates unsightly backscatter in pictures.

While we were in Cozumel two years ago she shot over 600 pictures over the 5 days of diving. The sting ray picture below was from that trip. The rest are current from this past July 4th dive trip where she led 27 people for 3 days of diving in Cozumel.

Let me know what you think of these shots (shot with a SeaLife point-and-shoot 6MP and no post processing):

Today's Apocalypse Sign: Yep, They're Still Here... Weekend Graphs!

Time once again for a weekly wrap-up or a new week kick-start. Either way, these graphs should bring a measure of necessary "mindless comedy" to your Sunday. I have included a bonus 6th graph today since they still haven't solved the "oil in the gulf problem".

Enjoy and share as needed.

Today's Apocalypse Sign: I Serve The Greater Good

I have had several inquiries and a couple emails regarding my Monday Minute posting of the sandals with the bottle opener built in. I did not think it would raise this much interest, but since it did, I figure what the hell a public service post from me was in order.

There is no other way to say it...these sandals are comfortable (for all-day wearing & walking), badass, and yeah, they have a bottle opener built into the sole! Freakin' genius I tell ya. Imagine how cool and God-like it is to go to a party where they have non-screw top brew and you are wearin' these babies. This is THE ice breaker of all ice breakers.

Here is the pic and then the site. Many styles for you to check out. Women, there are some for you too! I sport the Reef Fanning Pro Model in leather.

Is this not the coolest thing ever???

Now here's the site...go check it out! Plenty of summer left to impress someone.

Today's Apocalypse Sign: The Monday Minute, Oh Yeah

I have really been enjoying these. I guess that's why I keep playing. I was actually looking forward to this when I came home from work today...how creepy is that! Anyway here ya go...from the bunker:

What's your real name?

Well Sherlock, if you have been reading this blog you know it, if you haven't then you can know it pretty quick...beyond that I ain't talkin', see.

Have you ever fabricated a story or anything on your blog?
You can do that?? Here I thought the freakin' blog police fact-checked everything!! Well hell, now I can post more often. Thanks for the tip.

When in the car do you listen to the radio/CDs/iPod/etc?
I listen to the high-pitched whine of my fuel pump and wonder, and wonder, if this is the day I get stranded on the LBJ Freeway, it's very adventurous!

Describe the 'sexiest' item of clothing that you own?
Gotta be my sandals with the built in bottle opener on the bottom (see picture below). No better way to pick up chicks at a beach bar! Any man that can open a beer bottle with his feet is a God...

Would you be willing to breastfeed your friend's three year old child?
I am absolutely certain this would get me a cell mate erroneously named "Tiny" and some not-so-gentle inmate lovin'. And if I survived that, a stigma that Babo won't wash off, would keep me from living in your neighborhood. I'll pass.

Today's Apocalypse Sign: Taliban Training Monkey Soldiers for Jihad?

As many you know from a previous post...I loves me a gooood monkey story. They are just down right funny and any story benefits from monkey references. Why should the war against terrorism not invite in a little monkey-shines? For this I give you exhibit A:

From the Atlantic Wire...

The People's Daily, a newspaper produced by China's ruling communist party, has either been hilariously pranked or has out-reported every news outlet in Afghanistan to secure the scoop of the century. The outlet today reports that the Taliban in Afghanistan is "training monkeys to use weapons to attack American troops." After 16 years of war and nine years of battling the U.S., the Islamist insurgents have decided to arm monkeys with "AK-47 rifles and Bren light machine guns in the Waziristan tribal region near the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan."

The Chinese author, who apparently believes that PETA is more influential than the 31 percent of Americans who oppose the Afghan war, tries to explain what's happening. "Analysts believe that apart from using 'monkey killers' to attack the American troops, the Taliban also sought to arouse Western animal protectionists to pressure their governments to withdraw troops from Afghanistan."

Ace blogger and journalist Steve Hynd uncovered this strange article, adding, "I have no idea where China's People's Daily got this or what it thinks it's doing by publishing it, but it's too weird/funny not to pass along. ... Banana Akhbar!" It's not clear what species of monkey is involved in the alleged jihad, but the most likely may be the mischievous Rhesus Macaque, which can be found in parts of Afghanistan.

Oddly, the People's Daily article cites an unnamed "British-based media agency" and insists, "The report and photos have been widely spread by media agencies and Web sites across the world." As if the story were not strange enough, it ends with this bit of history, which Hynd confirms has no actual basis:

Ironically, the initiators of "monkey soldiers" are the Americans. Between the 1960s and the 1970s, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) trained massive "monkey soldiers" in the Vietnam War and dispatched armed monkeys to dangerous jungles to launch assaults on Vietnamese soldiers. Today, the Taliban forces have given the American troops some of their own medicine.

When armed animals enter interpersonal wars, what kind of world will we face? This cannot but arouse our reflections and concerns.

The Atlantic Wire cannot speak for everyone but our reflections have certainly been aroused.

Today's Apocalypse Sign: Wait A (Monday) Minute Mister Postman...

Since I enjoyed it so much the last time here we go again....

1. Can you burp the ABC's and if so prove it because like Ian says if we can't
see it, it didn't or doesn't happen.
Negative Johnny, any communication like this is classified! It didn't happen...got it?

2. So lets just say you have a 9 hour drive ahead of you would you consider
wearing Depends so you didn't have to stop multiple times? Did you know Depends
now comes in fun colors? ( I have to know this one)
And ye shall know quickly----NO, NO

3. Run your tongue down five feet of a new york city street or press your tongue
into a strangers nostril?
If I only had one day to live then the street thing just to gross out all the bystanders, otherwise I would find a stranger with a really small nose, preferrably female, who would never kiss me again...yeah this is a good one!

4. If you had an envelope that contained the date you would die would you open
it? Only if I had originally wrote down a date and then sealed it in the envelope...cause then it would for sure be bogus.

5. Which one song describes your sex life best? Bust it yo....

Bonus Q: 6.Would you rather fly when you fart or pee every time you laugh?
Both would be entertaining at a keg party, or dinner with the in-laws.

Today's Apocalypse Sign: Opposite Sides Of The World, Same Annoying Noise

I don't know if any of you have watched any of the World Cup matches. I personaly think soccer is generally as entertaining as watching grass grow. Any game that lasts 90 minutes on a huge field with a bunch of guys running around that cannot touch the ball with their hands and who will be elated if the score is 1-nil, has boredom written all over it for me. {Same reason I don't watch hockey.} It doesn't help that the U.S.A. does not usually fare very well in World Cup (or soccer in general) and that I do not know one single rule about the the game. Unless you count the fact that I understand the ball going in the net is a goal, but this is a pretty universal game concept.

Okay, I have totally digressed...

The purpose of this post is to aquaint (or maybe re-aquaint) you with the musical nonsense of the world and how half-a world apart, things are not that much different.

To whit: I give you the digeridoo (top) and the vuvuzela (bottom).

To define the differences first (and they are subtle):

The digeridoo is an Australian aborigine musical instrument. To see this instrument click HERE. To hear this instrument click HERE. To experience the digeridoo watch this:

Got it? I know most of you have probably heard this instrument in a Crocodile Dundee movie or maybe the movie Australia. I doubt you have a digeridoo club in your neighborhood...although that first link above might suggest otherwise. Some may think it is esoteric to say they can play the digeridoo but really, they are just blowing a stick when it comes right down to it. And will NOT get you laid (ala the guitar).

*****

Now for the digeridoo-wannabe/cousin/ripoff, the vuvuzela. To experience the full World Cup effect turn your speakers up to maximum, put your head right next to them, and watch this:

****

Now the digeridoo (this is a really hard word to type...try it) is a hand carved piece of wood instrument, usually eucalyptus tree, that you blow into and create different sounds by how you blow it, how you move your lips, and how you roll your tongue. There are no holes or anything to vary the sound beyond that. Although as you see in the video above moving your hands and fingers along the instrument gives the illusion of altering the sound or just looks disturbingly gay. These instruments come toned in different keys (not sure how this is done) and apparently are sometimes used in ensemble performances. The sound is often hypnotic but I'm sure that only lasts for a short while unless you are under the influence of something mind-altering.

The vuvuzela (slightly easier word to type...but not always) is a piece of molded plastic only slightly resembling a clarinet. It is a kids toy, really. It is made in a factory (so I guess there are jobs at stake if they ban them from the next World Cup) costs about $10 USD (and you have to buy a minimum of 1000) and can also be used to cover your penis if you are inclined to run through the jungle or just want to "cover up".

Who does this guy on the left think he is kidding??? The guy on the right? Doubt it. Is there penis cover envy in the jungle?? Another subject for another time perhaps.

Back to it...

While digeridoos are generally played solo or at most one or two together, the vuvuzela is designed to be abused by 100,000 or so people packed into a soccer stadium for 90 freakin' minutes straight. The general sound while similar is miles apart on the tolerance scale.

I admittedly watched the vuvuzela soccer match for third place between Germany and Uraguay. These freakin' noise makers, and seriously, let's call a spade a spade, were non. stop. for. the. entire. 90 minutes.

My scorecard for the game was as follows:

19th minute - goal Germany
28th minute - goal Uraguay
30th minute - short nap
51st minute - goal Uraguay
56th minute - goal Germany
60th minute - short nap
82nd minute - goal Germany
Germany wins 3-2 by soccer standards this was a barnburner.

I say that to say this...the volume controlled noise from the vuvuzelas actually, gently, helped me drift off to sleep during my naps! Now the people in the stands had their ears bleeding and some probably wanted to turn around and beat the guy behind them to death with his own vuvuzela about, oh, the 45th minute. How does this constant noise not qualify as some sort of voluntary torture? Especially when it is happening in South Africa? Maybe this is Nelson Mandela's revenge for all those years in prison.

All in all I think it is at least interesting that Australia and South Africa share a common musical bond. Though truth be told...I favor the digeridoo.

That is your cultural, musical gift for the day.

I may watch the final tomorrow between Spain and the Netherlands. I always like a good nap on Sunday.

Today's Apocalypse Sign: You Never Truly Know Someone

I have been thinking long and hard about this for the past couple of weeks. Does anyone really know their fellow man? A friend. A spouse. A family member. A colleague. Think of the times you have said, "I can't believe so-and-so did or didn't do this or that." When is the last time you said it?

Most of the time this is usually about something trivial...I can't believe he could afford that car." or "I can't believe she moved clear across the country". And when I say trivial I don't mean unimportant, I mean these are not shocking-to-the-core type events. Nothing like what I experienced 12 days days ago when I found out a work-friend had strangled his wife to death in their house.

See? You don't know me or him and it is shocking to read those words in print isn't it? How do you react when you get news that is like a spike to the base of the brain?

I am not even sure I heard what I was hearing at that time I was being told. Stunned disbelief was a huge understatement. I could not even process it. Here was someone I had worked with for over 10 years, had been to his house, had met his wife and kids, ate dinner there...he had smoked brisket for me a couple times and always smoked turkey and ham for our company Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners. He was an all-around good guy.

He was our company landscape maintenance technician. Always in good humor, joking with the girls in the office whenever he came in to turn in his expenses or get a check to buy supplies. This is how I saw him when he was in the office less than 24 hours before he murdered his wife. How the hell do you process that? It reminds me of the IQ test question, "look at these four things and decide which one doesn't fit". None of this fit with the man I "knew".

They say after strangling her in their home (fortunately their kids had gone to San Antonio to spend the summer with their grandparents) he loaded her body into the front seat of their SUV and drove about a mile to the Lutheran church and left it there with her inside. Presumably he walked home. She was found the next morning ironically by the church landscaper and the Reverend. He was arrested shortly thereafter.

My mind was on hyper-drive for some days after this. For a young man (mid-thirties) who spent most of his day outdoors in the sun and fresh air, he may never get to enjoy that again. He will never drive a car, swim in a pool, play with his kids in the park, take a vacation, earn a living, play in the snow, smell the scents of a Mexican restaurant when the wind blows just right. He will never have a Merry Christmas or a Happy New Year. His kids will never know their father tucking them in at night or buying them an ice cream cone on a sweltering summer day. In one fell swoop these children went from being happy go-lucky kids to no longer having parents. His wife will know even less.

Everything I looked at daily or remembered about this man I "knew" was quickly distilled into the rapidly filling column of my mental ledger entitled Things He Will Never Get To Do Again. Odd thoughts throughout the day, especially when I'd walk outside and smell the air or feel the sun.

This was one first of a lifetime I could have easily done without.

Speculation has been rampant as to why this happened, to how and why the switch flipped to Homicide in his brain. Not being a particularly religious man, his wife was becoming more interested in the church. Some say the Lutheran church where she was found was the church she wanted to join and he was very opposed to it. Others say there had been trouble at home and that night she told him she was leaving and he just snapped. His demeanor at work never indicated any change in his home life. Rumors abound that he was having an affair. All sorts of things swirling about this man I "knew".

The photo that was posted on the Internet news site of a man I "knew" was in an orange jumpsuit and a stare I cannot quite describe. It was not the look of someone full of regret, remorse, fear, or anger, but more like...like nothing. This may be what is described as the "1000-yard stare" I don't know. I cannot fathom the rage that it would take to put your hands around the neck of someone you loved and raised children with and violently squeeze the last breath out of her body. Knowing these people makes it intensely disconcerting. For if I "knew" him what do I truly know about many of the others around me?

It has been said that each man has his limit or his price or his breaking point in all things, be it pain, despair, humiliation, etc. I believe many of us are capable of despicable acts under the right circumstances, mostly for survival. But most of us, I think, believe this to be confined to a time of great common horror...say, well, say any of the subjects ever put up on the big screen as a catastrophic motion picture. Who hasn't watched a movie and said, " Yeah, I could do that if I had to". But this was too close, too personal, too intense and for me, too unbelievable.

Some days later my thoughts turned to prison life. How would he survive prison? What if this is a life sentence? Prison gangs. Shanks. The yard. The Huntsville, Texas federal prison is just like you would imagine it to be. How do you assimilate the fact that you are going there possibly for the rest of your life and you will be fresh meat walking in? Two weeks ago cutting grass and enjoying life, soon to be devolved as a human being. Oddly I feel very bad for him and know I will miss seeing him a couple times a week...at least for a while. This all will fade, as mercifully our brain does not keep these intense feelings on the front burner for long.

This is why I had to write this tonight. If I hadn't I'm afraid that I might never have done it and the whole thing would have faded to black as I know it will eventually.

And one future day, for no particular reason, I will ask someone..."Can you believe he actually did that?" And it will not then be shocking-to-the-core anymore. It will have faded to a matter-of-fact statement.

The fate of this man I "knew".

What's the most annoying thing you wish bloggers would stop doing?
Probably all the things I am guilty of doing on other peoples blogs...or not. Seriously, if you are reading a blog that annoys you...stop it, go find another one.
