Does this symbol make you feel warm, fuzzy and reassured?
Is it reassuring that the FDA's process is redundant and thorough so no chance of any dangerous drug getting through to the public exists?
Yeah, me either.
Why has the FDA forced the cigarette industry to include all manner of warnings (graphic and otherwise) yet stopped short of banning smoking for carcinogenic poisoning of the public (including kids)?
And why do they approve only 3 methods legally allowed to be prescribed for the treatment of any form of cancer? They are: Surgery (traumatic and debilitating), Radiation (something that causes cancer to treat cancer? Is this Dr Suess medicine), Chemotherapy (see Radiation above).
MONEY
That is the answer. Big Pharma money, cancer research and oncology medicine money, money thrown at the FDA by the same companies that seek their approval. My God, in this economy, what kind of hit do you think the nation would take if all cigarettes, cigars, and pipes were declared illegal tomorrow? Add to that, what would happen if all-organic and natural cures for virtually every disease were allowed to be openly offered to every patient as a legitimate alternative to side-effect laden drugs and crippling treatments? The ripple effect of this being grants for research drying up, institutions of higher medical learning rendered unnecessary, etc.
Society as we know it in the USA would be in total chaos. The economy today would look like the biggest boom ever compared to the next few weeks. Worse yet, in an ironic twist of cruel fate, too many people would continue to live. We need a certain amount of death to occur as this planet grows a population out of control every year. Right? Soylent Green is people.
More sinister than that, what if THAT is the real reason behind the FDA? Seriously, a government agency that has the power to STOP gruesome smoking related deaths and they do nothing but make it a choice for the public. Yet this same agency will not allow a doctor to refer me to the Burzynski Clinic for proven cancer curing treatments. In fact this clinic has been targeted on numerous occasions for illegally prescribing unauthorized treatments. It is now "FDA approved" for Stage III clinical trials (must meet criteria). The criteria is "DND"...Damned Near Dead from radiation, surgery, or chemo first.
As my only politically opinion-laced post of the Challenge (I hope), I ask you to write your senator and congressman and plead with them to disband the FDA. For some of us, they have already killed family and loved ones in the name of greed and profit. If or when you receive any medical diagnosis of some seriousness, please do your homework and do not be talked into anything. That is the medical community's biggest weapon. Fear and urgency. Resist. Research. Nothing is going to kill you in two days.
Unless you give the doctors the chance.

They say there is a natural or herbal remedy for almost every ailment, but since those can't be approved by the FDA, we don't get a lot of those here in the USA.

Bah, I used to be a smoker. I finally quit, and I must say, it feels fantastic to breathe again.
Anyway, yeah my girlfriend was saying that a chemist has concocted a gum that if chewed, will guarantee you don't get cavities, but of course it's banned because toothpaste companies and dentists will go out of business.
Hi, a very interesting post. One of my daughters had breast cancer and you are correct. Those are the only approved treatments for it. The treatments can kill you as fast as the cancer can. Fortunately, she survived the treatments and is in remission, but has to continue taking lots of medication. regards to you, Ruby

When you asked the first question, I started to laugh. Yes, I totally believe what you say about the FDA. It's so sad that the govt is willing to let people suffer for the sake of money.
I have no faith in the FDA, but you've just taken it one step further and brought up some very interesting questions. The sheer amount being poured into cancer research, with no "cure" finding its way to light, is insane. I know a little girl who was diagnosed with leukemia at age 3. She is now 7 and, after repeated treatments with chemo and then a bone marrow transplant, has a clean bill of health. Well, the cancer is gone. However, the secondary effects from her "treatments" will be with her the rest of her life. They are almost more horrible than the cancer, and they are forever for her. Forever is a long time for a 7-year old.
Did you know the FDA has been trying to make it illegal to produce and sell natural supplements, including vitamins and the like? I forget where I read about this, but it was a year ago or so. That's a high money area, and big Pharma would far rather be peddling prescriptions in place of supplements.

Alex: Technically they can be approved by the FDA, they just WON'T approve them as viable treatment options...because they cannot be patented and generate millions and billions for some company. And most all herbs and natural remedies can be obtained even in the US. But you are right, some you have to go to Mexico or Germany for.
Jenn: If you are interested Read Kevin Trudeau's book Natural Cures They Don't Want You To Know About. It supports many other papers I have read and is scary to say the least. We trust waay too much in the government looking out for us.
Chiz: Good for you! I too am a twice reformed smoker. Still consider one of the greatest accomplishments of my life...seeing how many people I have known fail at every attempt. If I could just convince my wife to quit.

Shannon: Nobody gets it...they do not want a CURE for cancer. There is no money in a cure. Repeat business is money. Just like any business. The fact that we are willing to believe everything we are told and forced into via fear and ignorance...that is their greatest weapon. Yes I have been tracking the FDA trying to make supplements conform to the same regs at drugs...they tried hard in 1997 and were shot down. Recently the cry has gone up again to control supplements with government interferance. Don't ever let it happen.
