Today's Apocalypse Sign: The Weekend In Black And White
This may not be the best lightning strike ever but it was miraculous to me. I stepped out side during a pre-storm light show and hand-held my camera, snapping this shot on the very first picture...for the next 20 minutes I chased another well-timed shot across the sky and never caught another one!

Today's Apocalypse Sign: The Autumnal Weekend Graphs
I actually attended a sporting event in Jerry Jones World today. That is to say a football game at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX. This is not your fathers stadium, trust me. Anyway, this was a 7AM departure for breakfast and early arrival at the stadium. The post on this observational adventure will be forthcoming but suffice for now to say, it delayed my posting today.

Today's Apocalypse Sign: The Weekend In Black And White
The last few years I have taken to getting my wife a wedding anniversary gift from justpaperroses.com. This past year was steel (11 yrs). So I got her a half dozen steel roses. Just playing around one Saturday I shot a few B&W pictures using my new macro lense. Here is one.

Today's Apocalypse Sign: iPod Monday Is Here
Very late in getting this out so I'll just say here it is!!! No links this week...sorry.
The winners this week:
1. Flash And The Pan - Hey St Peter (from their fantastic 1978 album full of all great songs)
2. Elton John - All The Girls Love Alice (Yellow Brick Road is my favorite EJ album. Love every song on it. This being one of my favs...and a very interesting subject for the mid-70's) Moog synth ruled the 70's!
3. Creed - One (this band was great right out of the gate. This song off their 1997 debut album My Own Prison demonstrates why.)
4. Foghat - Honey Hush (my post-highschool years were filled with lots of Foghat!)
5. Korn - Freak On A Leash (first Korn song I ever heard...loved it. Not completely into all their music but they have some really good and imaginative stuff)
Well a mixed set to be sure. Feedback always welcome. Do you have a favorite Yellow Brick Road track? Ever listen to Flash And The Pan.

Today's Apocalypse Sign: The Final 100 Days
The Mayan calendar on the right side bar has ticked down to the 100 final days. Oddly this final triple-digit day falls on the 11th anniversary of 9/11...to the day. Tuesday September 11th, 2001.
Eleven years ago today...100 days left before the Mayan calendar closes it chapter in time.
In between we have an election, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Texas State Fair, my sister's birthday...and things with meaning to you.
I heard this morning that the Taliban have put a bounty on the head of Prince Harry...kill or kidnap. In a word..."all their resources into the effort". I hope Harry keeps his head down while he is in Afghanistan. And I have a friend there as well...training the Afghani Police. Not the safest of tasks lately.
I fear something happening somewhere today, terrorist related. It just seems so impossible for everyone to be aware of everything and stop all possible outlets of extremist violence. A friend of mine once said, "sometimes it's better to be lucky than good". In the recent memory we have been very lucky. A couple books I have read lately have borne that out. Lucky with a heavy dose of enemy incompetence. They don't make rabbits-foot talismans that big.
I want to go to Ground Zero and see all there is to see there. I watched the show on History or A&E about the work that went into the design and installation of the monument to all who died that day 11 years ago. How cooling pipes had to be installed to keep the engraved metal from getting too hot to allow people to touch it. Ironically a preventive measure for both the solemness of the moment and the warding off of potential litigious visitors opportunities.
Each one of the names etched with high pressure water jets. One of the victims surviving family members were there to etch the first name on the memorial. It is a fascinating program to watch from the awarding of the contract to Michael Arad to the final construction and installation. This is more than a work of art it is an engineering marvel. Watch it if you can find it.
This day has again been set aside, as it should be, for remembrance and reflection. I, like many Americans, believed vengeance was necessary for the events of 9/11. This was not a Christian "turn the other cheek" time for our people. The wars in both Afghanistan and Iraq while tragic to a fault have at the very least showed that the USA comes with both barrels loaded. We are not good at managing war (clearly) as the strategy morphs from military at the beginning to something of ugly politics the longer it wages. The death toll unbearable...even one. Iraq will become a mess and who knows about Afghanistan.
I am not an Obama supporter in hardly any fashion. I do however applaud his resolve and dedication to targeted strikes on the terrorist community. I want them afraid to go outside, step away from women and children even for a second, take a drive or live a life. I want them to know the end is coming in the last buzz of a drone and the flash of a hellfire rocket. This is biblical vengeance...eye for an eye kind of stuff. I read the book Kill or Capture: The War On Terror and The Soul Of The Obama Presidency by Daniel Klaidman found it a riveting read. I recommend it.
In the end I choose to celebrate that Osama Bin Laden is dead as are many of his cohorts. While this may not stop terrorists from attacking us again and may not be a morally agreeable stance for some people to accept, I fervently wish somewhere in the world tonight some rabid Jihadist contacts the spirit of Bin Laden by Ouija or other means and finds out there are no virgins only fire waiting for him on the other side.

Today's Apocalypse Sign: Keep ON Rockin' That iPod...Monday
A rock and roll cornucopia this week. New and old but all rockers!
1. Foo Fighters - Monkey Wrench ( I know a lot of people are tired of the FF but they have so many great songs and I think it is pretty cool that Dave Grohl went from unknown drummer in Nirvana to leading the Foo Fighters to the top of their genre) I like them. PS. Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones of Zeppelin fame came on stage and jammed with the band during this show at Wembley.
2. Jethro Tull - Locomotove Breath ( takes me back to my high school days. Tull was a staple back in the mid 70's.) This is what you would have seen had there been rock n' roll back in Shakespeare's day.
3. Linkin Park - In The End (love this band and love this song. Great lyrics...right up there with Green Day's Time Of Your Life)
4. Pink Floyd - Time (from one of the greatest bands greatest album, Dark Side Of The Moon...live in Wembley 1974)
5. Kiss - Strutter (Could be the first Kiss song that really got me into the band back in the 70's) This is a 1975 B&W performance at Winterland.

Today's Apocalypse Sign: Cool September Weekend Graphs
Now we are moving into the fall...today's high was below 90 and a cool north wind was blowing. I walked outside this morning and almost shivered...yes! The dogs had no idea what to make of a walk without oppressive swelter conditions. Nice!!
Hope your weekend is going well and you are enjoying doing whatever it is you do on the weekend. Me, I am watching the final round of the BMW golf tourney (Tiger is still in the thick of it) and then the first game of the season for the Packers is up at 3:15...against a strong Niners team. Glad they are playing at Lambeau but I am still nail-biting on the defense. We shall see.

Today's Apocalypse Sign: Magical Weekend In Black And White
Twenty years ago I bought this little guy at the gift shop in the Portland, OR airport. It was a fine addition to my wizard collection and has some history. You see, it is a sculpture made out of compressed ash from the Mount St. Helens eruption in the 80's. I imagined to those in the area near the eruption it must have seemed like the apocalypse had begun.

Today's Apocalypse Sign: Labor Day iPod Monday
No work today but still took time to wind down from the great PGA tournament that finished today. Tiger fought hard but ended up third in a star-studded field. Just two events left for the $10 million FedEx cup championship. Then it's on to the Ryder Cup...USA vs Europe! On our home soil this year.

Today's Apocalypse Sign: Labor Day Weekend Graphs
o another summer has come and gone (or going depending on where you live, coz in Texas it runs through October pretty much). Labor Day weekend always signaled the start of school, leaves changing soon and 20-degree drops in temperature when I was a kid. Now it means an end to a crazy busy summer of work.
In honor of this 3-day weekend I have gone back to mostly traditional graphs I have found...and a couple hmmmm visuals.
