Today's Apocalypse Sign: It Passed Me Right By

This marks the 354th post this here ol' blog. Wasn't paying attention and the 350 milestone passed me right by. Seems amazing to me to have posted this much but in retrospect it could have been way more and easily 400 by now. I have been a slacker for the last few months.

2011 seemed to have gone by so fast. I guess years tend to do that when you are older and praying for time to slow down just a little bit. I remember it seeming to take forever to reach 21 just so I could drink the hard stuff! Ironically then some time went by unknown to me because of the hard stuff...isn't life funny that way.

Anyway, the year is hours from being over and a new shiny 2012 will be here. The final year of the Mayan calendar. This will be the theme of many upcoming posts and the cornerstone subject of April's A-Z Challenge 2012. I have already started collecting subject matter and will probably draft some posts when I am on vacation in a couple weeks. This is going to be another fun challenge!

I have enjoyed reading so many blogs this year. I look forward to picking up a few new ones this coming year. It's gets tougher to decide...read more and comment on fewer? Read less and comment more? My days vary on those decisions but I say to many of you, I read a lot even if you don't always see a comment from me. I bow down to those who juggle this better than I. Much like Pat Tillett I get easily distracted and it doesn't always take something shiny...just an odd thought entering my brain drives me to open a new tab and search for 30 minutes. See, I went off track there for a minute.

I want to take this opportunity to thank those who have continued to drop by and visit and maybe even leave an opinion from time to time...I appreciate you.

Rambling is over...stay safe tonight and in the coming days...

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Today's Apocalypse Sign: In Which I Am An Owner

I always wanted to redact something!!!

Today I received a great Christmas present...my Green Bay Packers stock certificate! I am now an owner of an NFL franchise. This is amazingly cool. Included with the certificate was a small booklet with all sorts of "what it means to be involved with the Green Bay Packers" stuff in it. There was also a letter from the CEO and President of the Packers, Mark Murphy, that ended with the invitation to attend the shareholders dinner next July at Lambeau. I may sleep with ALL this stuff tonight.

And two days ago my wife gave me a commemorative Super Bowl ring from XLV...inscribed with my initials and everything! Best reason not to grow old is to have fun kid-like moments like these. I can't wait for the game Christmas night at Lambeau. If only I could be there...let's not ask for too much.

Oh and the best part (at least since I live in Dallas) last night on the news it was announced that the Packers had supplanted the Dallas Cowboys as America's team...how great is that.

AND to top it all off Aaron Rodgers was named the AP male athlete of the year.

Wow! I'm tired now so I need to go eat...

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all who dwell here from time to time.

Today's Apocalypse Sign: A Shout Out To A Friend...And A Giveaway!

I was over at my friend Alex J Cavanaugh's fine blog and saw he was having a book giveaway. In addition to wanting another copy, I wanted to help spread the word (in the spirit of the season) on the essence of his first book and promotion of his newest book and sequel to ---- CassaStar.

CassaFire will be released Feb 28th and I am super stoked that this sequel will be here soon. I am convinced and have told Alex on numerous occasions that CassaStar absolutely should be made into a movie. George Lucas where are you???

Anyway, read the teaser below and click the link above to hop over to Alex's site and pay him a visit. Warning: if you go you will be sucked into the Ninja Army and ya know that's forever, right? Following him is a good thing. Go anyway.

Pass the word and get your chance to win a copy of one of the best scifi books I have read in a while. You will not be disappointed. Now go...wait, read this first>>>>>

From Alex hisself, the following:

CassaStar

To pilot the fleet’s finest ship…
Few options remain for Byron, a talented young man with a troubled past and rebellious attitude. Slated to train as a Cosbolt pilot, Byron is determined to prove his worth and begin a new life. Much to his chagrin, Bassa, the toughest instructor in the fleet, takes notice of the young pilot. As war brews on the edge of space, Byron requires a navigator of exceptional quality to survive. Bassa must make a decision that could well decide the fate of both men. Will their skills be enough as they embark on a mission that may stretch their abilities to the limit?

“…calls to mind the youthful focus of Robert Heinlein’s early military sf, as well as the excitement of space opera epitomized by the many Star Wars novels. Fast-paced military action and a youthful protagonist make this a good choice for both young adult and adult fans of space wars.” - Library Journal

Available in all eBook forms and at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Amazon UK.

If sucked into CassaStar… I’d be Byron. (I mean really, who else who I be?) If made into a movie, Byron would be played by Chris Pine.

Today's Apocalypse Sign: The Weekend Graphs

Sorry, not feeling the mood today. My beloved Packers took it on the chin today by choosing to play the Chiefs like they had never seen a football before. It is the game you never want to have as a team on a roll. It is the game you never want to have when an undefeated season AND setting the record winning streak are within your grasp. In other words...they SUCKED bigtime today. No excuse.

Anyway, here is something to brighten your day wherever you are (except Kansas City)...

Enjoy!

Today's Apocalypse Sign: The Times Have Changed

Remembering those who helped keep us free.

Today is Pearl Harbor day. Many of you, like me, had fathers or family members who fought in WWII. My father served on a PT boat in the Phillipines the same time Kennedy was being a hero.  Not sure if he ever knew him. We never really got to talk about that.  He died when I was 14 in 1970. During the War To End All Wars there were no videos and or music written that I know of condemning the largest ever expanse of armed forces fighting over multiple battlefields.

Then the Vietnam War came with all its controversy and clashed with the hippie movement that created much tension at home. I lived not far from Kent State University in Ohio when the National Guard clashed with the protesting student body in 1970 and 4 Dead In Ohio was written by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

The images in this clip immediately took me back to that day. It was pretty scary stuff at the time.

Here is one of the songs I remember from my youth in the 60's. It was all over the radio.

Edwin Starr - WAR (apologies in advance for the 1969 quality video)

I was big into the Airplane and this was their anti-war song for the 60's. Make sure and watch montage of images that will bring back some memories.
Jefferson Airplane - Volunteers OF America

Today we have the Iraq/Afghanistan war and this jewel from System Of A Down. This is strong music and the lyrics are included as Serj is a little hysterical at times. But it is today's anti-war song. This video also proves that Meytal Cohen is just a kick-ass drummer.

Lyrics To BYOB by System Of A Down

Why do they always send the poor?

Barbarisms by Barbara with pointed heels
Victorious victories kneel for brand new spanking deals
Marching forward hypocritic and hypnotic computers
You depend on our protection yet you feed us lies from the tablecloth

Everybody's going to the party, have a real good time
Dancing in the desert blowing up the sunshine

Kneeling roses disappearing into Moses' dry mouth
Breaking into Fort Knox stealing our intentions
Hangars sitting dripped in oil, crying, "Freedom!"
Handed to obsolation still you feed us lies from the tablecloth

Everybody's going to the party, have a real good time
Dancing in the desert blowing up the sunshine
Everybody's going to the party, have a real good time
Dancing in the desert blowing up the sunshine

Blast off, it's party time
And we don't live in a fascist nation
Blast off, it's party time
And where the fuck are you?

Where the fuck are you?
Where the fuck are you?

Why don't presidents fight the war?
Why do they always send the poor?
Why don't presidents fight the war?
Why do they always send the poor?
Why do they always send the poor?
Why do they always send the poor?
Why do they always send the poor?

Kneeling roses disappearing into Moses' dry mouth
Breaking into Fort Knox stealing our intentions
Hangars sitting dripped in oil, crying, "Freedom!"
Handed to obsolation still you feed us lies from the tablecloth

Everybody's going to the party, have a real good time
Dancing in the desert blowing up the sunshine
Everybody's going to the party, have a real good time
Dancing in the desert blowing up the sun

Where the fuck are you?
Where the fuck are you?

Why don't presidents fight the war?
Why do they always send the poor?
Why don't presidents fight the war?
Why do they always send the poor?
Why do they always send the poor?
Why do they always send the poor?

Why do they always send the poor?
Why do they always send the poor?
Why do they always send the poor?
They always send the poor
They always send the poor

God Bless America and the freedoms we have.

Today's Apocalypse Sign: Four Times In 100 Years

Disclaimer: To my UK readers, you will not give a rats ass about this post. But hey, what better time to educate yourself about American football! Right?

For only the fourth time in their existence (92 years) the NFC and Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers are Selling Team Stock. At 8 AM CST on Tuesday 12/6/11, 250,000 shares of Packer stock go on sale. The last stock sale was in 1997-98...and that was the first time since 1950 there had been a sale. So this is only the second time in my life this event has happened...and I didn't even know about the one in '97! Not big on the internet back then. I do not intend to miss this one!

You can buy up to 200 shares at $250 a share. You will be able to say you own a part of a pro football team, be linked to a storied franchise and winner of a league-leading 13 championships in their history, AND get a Shareholder Super Bowl Ring when Green bay repeats as SB champs this year!

Even if you are not a Packer's fan, if you are a pro football fan, you gotta love this opportunity. I plan to buy ONE share and frame it. Period. No other pro team will ever be represented like this. The Packers are the ONLY publicly owned team and that allows for a chance like this. So if you love the game here is your opportunity to get  one-of-a-kind piece of memorabilia.

And if you are not a Lions, Bears, or Vikings fan maybe you can join me in rooting on the Pack for another Super Bowl victory season.

Go Pack Go!

Today's Apocalypse Sign: The Weekend Graphs!

Nothing fancy this week. No witty lead-in...no brilliant revelation...no smart-ass comments (what!)...and for sure, no relevant content. By this time next week we will be under 365 days on the Mayan calendar...plans must be made.

Instead enjoy these creations of your fellow man and thank God for opposable thumbs!

Enjoy!
