Today you will receive not one but two D words.( I chose Double Dose as the title rather that Double D, you can understand why.) They go hand in hand, that is to say they are related.
1) Disaster Kits
2) Doomsday Preppers (the series)
We'll go in reverse order here, Doomsday Preppers front and center...
I LOVE this show on NatGeo. Cannot get enough of it. These people may seem wacked out to normal people but since I am not normal I think they are simply exercising the Boy Scout motto, "Be Prepared". Sometimes to the extreme, but that's why I like it!
Each episode follows 3 separate Preppers in various parts of the country as they describe what they do daily, what they stockpiled, what they are preparing for (reason for the doomsday), and then an analysis by Prepper Experts (no kidding, they exist) as to how well each has prepared and recommendations to better their prepping. All wrapping with a final word from each on what they have done regarding the recommendations.
To let you know how serious this shit is, the first episode was about a family who already has stock piled a food cache to last 15 years for their 20 people band of survivors! They have built a compound out of 9 shipping containers, have two school buses converted to "bug out" vehicles, practice drills on loading and evacuating their compound (should it be compromised), and fire arms practice. And these people live just 35 miles outside of San Antonio. Not too far from me should I need to form a marauding group to hijack their supplies.
Some of these people have bought everything from an old missile base in Kansas (cost the government $4 million to build in 1960) bought by this hippie dude and his wife for $40K. This place is HUGE. Another guy bought 42 old school buses and buried them under ground in a complex. Covered them with 18 inches of concrete and like 20 feet of dirt. He can house 500 kids to rebuild the world!! Name of the place? Ark Two. Catch a few of these on youtube or NatGeo and you'll be hooked...AND you'll go out and buy SOMETHING prep related I promise. (I did)
Wouldn't you like to be a prepper tooo!

This is awesome. If I had the cash, I would no doubt invest in some anti-apocalyptic underground facility. Unfortunately, I'll have to watch the video later though because work bars me from downloading flash.
The Hubs and I watch Doomsday Preppers, but I can't get over how dumb these people are to go on tv and advertise what they've got stockpiled!
Wowser - nuts, but in a kind of understandable sort of way!
Lx
I would stockpile peanut butter and nutella. I would actually be very, very happy.
So what happens if nothing happens? I guess they won't go hungry...
I wouldn't mind owning an underground silo...
And, hey, they will be the ones with the last laugh. When my husband's job was at risk during rounds of layoffs at his workplace, we started stockpiling food for lean times. I know people in sales who do the same thing, because when you work on commission you are never guaranteed a good enough paycheck.
I realize these guys are far more extreme, and we can laugh now, but there is always the possibility that something big will happen, whatever it is, and I don't see the harm in being ready. Now, not living your life right now because you're busy preparing for the apocalypse is a problem, to me, but it's their life.

Chiz: Some of these people spend 15 grand a year prepping. These shows are really too cool...and apocalyptically educational!
Jenn: I have noticed they don't tell all and neither would I. Plus if I had a missle silo I would dare anyone to come and get me!
Laura: When you are watching the shows your mind just goes back and forth from: "should I go do something NOW" to "this is way overkill, but maybe not". It is thought provoking to say the least.
Whip: Aren't those two things semi-redundant?? Just asking...
Clarissa: I think some of their reasons for something happening (I mean martial law declared in the next two years??) is a little out there but the possibility of something...even devastating tornados or hurricanes require some level of preparation. So maybe not the end of the world but a few uncomfortable weeks...that might be worth preparing for.
Shannon: When I saw they bought that for $40k I was ready to go search the internet for available silos. That place is really fantastic but after watching that show I realized I would have to kill all of them in about 60 days...hey more food for me! Devoting every day to this is a little extreme.
i like being prepared (yet, i'm not!) but i don't want to overkill (and is that possible - maybe not?).
Romeo: You sound like you may not make it the first week. Decide and go for it! At least buy a good knife.
interesting video and post
do check out my E at GAC a-z
Chuck, check this out! At this exact moment I'm watching the latest episode on DVR. I'm in the middle on this subject. I think some of them are whack jobs and some of them are brilliant. One of the reasons I have an RV is to have an alternate place to go if the nuclear plant near us goes south or a tsunami comes. Which also explains why we live on a hill. Close to the ocean, but a couple hundred feet higher than sea level. Our RV is stored (when we aren't on the road) 12 miles inland in a very secure place. I believe in being heavily armed more than I do having huge stockpiles of food.
I wonder when the show is going to include people preparing for a zombie infestation?
Oh yeah, have you seen the show about the company that builds underground shelters for these folks?
Paul: Thanks for stopping by and I will check out your E!
Pat: I have not watched the latest DP yet but it's on my DVR (The Masters is on this weekend, so...). I would like to be heavily armed and have plenty of food...I think I need some lackeys first. Yes I have seen trailers for the show about the underground shelters but have not actually watched a show yet.
