Today's Apocalypse Sign: Belize It, It's True!

Belize. Sun Dancer Live Aboard. Life is good.

For one week in June this will be home for my wife and I. The 138-foot luxury live aboard Sun Dancer II. Click the link above to take a virtual tour of the boat. It is amazing!

Belize is located just south of the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico and borders Guatemala to the east and Honduras to the north. The cayes off the coast of Belize are where much of the diving takes place, but several dive spots are a little far out for a comfortable day trip, therefore...the live aboard.

My wife is leading a dive trip of 20 people and gets to travel for free...making the cost of my trip to join her, doable. Every couple could take a vacation like this if only one person had to pay!! This is similar to what we did last year on our trip to Fiji (see page tab above for the exciting Fiji story and it was also my F post for the A-Z last year). And the bonus is once again we will be celebrating our wedding anniversary in an exotic locale! AND everything including alcohol is paid for!! Sweet!

A live aboard is just like it sounds, we will be living aboard this boat (hell, it's a yacht!!) for the entire trip. We arrive in Belize city on June 16th and board the boat that afternoon. It will sail out from Belize to several dive sites over the week we are there (including the famous Blue Hole, which is so large it is actually visible from space. My wife dove this site a couple years ago and has wanted to return ever since, have a look...

Hence the name...Blue Hole!

The Blue Hole is roughly 1000 feet across and over 400 feet deep. It is actually a sinkhole that developed thousands of years ago. It formed off the shore of Lighthouse Reef atoll which is about 43 miles off the coast of Belize. You can see why at that distance the live aboard option is best. Plus the boat will visit other sites that really are only accessible via live aboard so the diving will be exclusive.

Since I am not a diver I am looking forward to some lazy days. Snorkeling, sunning, napping, eating, drinking, repeat. No cell phone, Internet, TV...just actually talking to people and photographing the experience. There is also an older lady going who is not a diver and she was on our Fiji trip so when all the others are under water for their dives there will still be someone to talk to...if I want to. I predict an overall relaxing, decompressing week.

Please check out these two links (videos) and tell me this is not going to be great!

The last day before we head home the boat will land and a day of cave tubing will finish off our trip before we board our flight home. I am also hoping we will be close enough to the Mayan ruins that are in Belize to at least see them and get a few photos.

Yeah, you wish you could be there, right? You can bet I'll be reporting in when I get back.

Happy B day!

My parents went to Belize last year, and they had a great time. That blue hole is pretty neat!

Oh yeah! I want to be there also! When I was a younger and used to dive, we had a trip all set up for Belize, but it never happened (can't remember the reason). This was waaayy back before anybody but divers had ever heard of the place. I'm sure you are going to have an awesome time!

Monti: She is both for sure...and really good at teaching new divers. There are ruins in Belize and I am hoping to check them out.

Congrats on this opportunity, and this is a very interesting blog. I actually happen to be born on 12.21... Haha, oddly enough this year, or 12.21.12 , will be my so called "sweet sixteen" Haha. I guess that will be some party! Haha.

Doesn't sound like a great trip at all. Perhaps I should go for you. I wouldn't want you to suffer. ;)

I used to always want to go to Belize. I'm not totally sure why, but I think it had something to do with marijuana. From what you've said it still sounds like a cool place to go.

Lucky, lucky you...and how wonderful your wife is leading a dive group on this trip, making it "doable".

Wonderful "B" post.

Wow! How the 'other half' live, eh?

Hope you have a fabulous time!

BTW, Chuck - DON'T get a copy of that book I was talking about (The Mayan Prophecy) before you go - it has some nasty doings in 'sink holes'......
:-o

This is so cool. So, so, so cool. I was just commenting on someone else's blog that I'd move to Belize if I won the lottery. I'm ammending that: I'd move to Belize and learn how to dive.

Chiz: As long as it's not a Gilligan's Island trip I'll be all right! And thank you for being jealous.

Robyn: Thanks...pictures will be forthcoming for sure!

Sara: How cool for you! I am sure nothing will happen to ruin your party (I hope, I hope).

Clarissa: I am sure I will suffer it just fine :)

Lee: Except for the nasty foreign prison scenario, that sounds like a reason to go. I will let you know how cool when I get back.

Jenny: Yeah, it is a long awaited perk while she went through all her instruction courses and certifications.

Sue: Hey, I'm the other half :) I am still thinking of getting the book and reading it on the trip!!

Stephanie: If you are interested in learning, my wife is a fantastic teacher. So if you ever move to Dallas, she can hook you up!

Thanks for stopping by.

This sure sounds like a perfect holiday. I can't dive, though it is on my bucket list to learn.
