Today's Apocalypse Sign: Health Voodoo, Part I

Sic semper tyrannis

I apologize in advance for the length of this post.
Vitamins. Minerals. Supplements. Naturally occurring and readily available in the food you eat and in the many health store venues that exist. These are things that were intended to sustain our life and our bodies from nature. Whatever your faith, the supreme being made these things in nature to support life.

Your Gestapo rogue government agency known as the FDA is campaigning once again to take away your freedom. Your most very basic freedom...choice.

Choice in deciding how to care for the most precious gift you have...your body and by definition your health. Surprisingly the FDA cares little for either. At least based on their actions and decisions. If you believe otherwise then the brainwashing marketing tactics of the government are working. And they work very well.

I will give you the most criminal example I can think of...cancer treatment. Did you know it is virtually illegal for a doctor to treat cancer in any way other than three FDA approved methods? This is a true statement, how ever it may be spun. Doctors can only prescribe some form of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy as recommended protocols to treat (and I use that term loosely) cancer. If you are diagnosed today with ANY form of cancer, those are your treatment choices.

Cutting and disfiguring or poisoning...those are your choices. Go here to see other choices. I have read this book cover to cover.

That however is a larger subject for another post. Today, the FDA is undertaking its battle once again to deprive you of being able to make the choice of natural cures and low cost treatments. Low cost treatments that are made from naturally (the real nature not the FDA's definition of "naturally") occurring substances that have been used all over the world medicinally for centuries. Why would they do this? Only one word...MONEY.

There's no money in it for the drug companies (Big Pharma) when it comes to supplements. They cannot patent natural substances. Only the Frankenstein drugs they develop with their many side effects can be patented. That's where the money is. Natural substances are forever...patents only a few years. Pills that cost only a few cents to make cost you hundreds of dollars a month. Yes, the FDA is not on your side. Can you see this is part of the health care problem in this country? High priced drugs that do little and create a whole host of secondary conditions.

Seventeen years ago Congress passed the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). In its essence the Act provided for prohibiting "the Federal Government from taking any actions to impose unreasonable regulatory barriers limiting or slowing the flow of safe products and accurate information to consumers."

Now in 2011, the FDA is doing precisely that. They are proposing heavy regulations that threaten to eliminate your access to nutritional supplements. Supplements you can buy in a health food store, over the Internet, or in your local CVS or Walgreens. Supplements that many of us count on in place of over-priced research-cost recovering drugs. It is clear to see how the money is involved. How can Big Pharma make a profit if you are allowed the choice of a $20 a month supplement versus a drug (with side effects nonetheless) costing 10 or 20 times that amount? Their lobbying efforts (billions of dollars) in Washington are another cost passed on in their drug prices.

It's not that the drugs are expensive to make, but average cost from start to finish to develop a new drug is near the $400 million mark. You bet you are going to start helping the drug companies recoup that investment. And who is going to help them? The FDA and the doctors who prescribe these drugs. Don't you love those constant TV commercials that tell you, "to ask your doctor if (insert drug name) is right for you." Trust me, if its not another one just like it will be. How many offsetting commercials have you seen promoting natural health products for any of these same conditions? Virtually none.

Know why? FDA says you can't say that. No manufacturer can say in any way, shape, or form that any supplement can treat or prevent any disease or condition. In fact it's the exact opposite...every bottle and package for every supplement has to state that it does NOT do those things. Look at any vitamin bottle you have to prove it.

Now what does the FDA want to do? They want any supplement ingredients introduced or modified since October 15th, 1994 to be classified as "new dietary ingredients" and in order for them to remain on the market they would have to undergo extensive safety testing and an approval process similar to that of new drugs. This to me is like running a battery of tests on a hand gun to make sure the safety is actually on.

I quote from Dr Julian Whitaker's Health & Healing newsletter for September 2011:

"It doesn’t matter if the ingredient in question is a naturally occurring nutrient present in food that has been on the market for 17 years. It could no longer be sold without going through this expensive and cumbersome process. This has nothing to do with safety or efficacy. The intention is clear: to destroy the entire nutritional supplement industry. And guess who’s waiting in the wings? That’s right, Big Pharma.”

Since the passage of DSHEA, the pharma lobbyists have been pressing the FDA to disrupt the manufacture and sale of supplements. They have the money to throw at the testing that the FDA is proposing. They want nothing more than to take over the supplement market and jack the prices through the roof. They know these products are safe despite the smear campaigns they use to scare the public. They could fast track the approval process and have both ends of the market…drugs and supplements. I thought monopolies were illegal in this country??

This is the most significant threat we have faced since 1976. Then as now, the FDA has tried to turn vitamins and minerals into prescription drugs. I, like many others, are vehemently opposed to this.

I have done a large amount of study and taken supplements religiously for over 2 decades now. I abhor prescriptions drugs. Sadly I have family and friends who blindly believe and trust in everything their doctor tells them and prescribes for them. I have tried to at least point them in the direction of educating themselves on natural alternative options for the their treatment. Even as adamant as I am about this subject, I know a man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still. I am glad I have at least half-convinced my wife on taking supplements.

I apologize again for the length of this post and trust me I could write volumes more but I will wrap up here with this…I have subscribed to the Health & Healing newsletter from Dr. Julian Whitaker for almost 15 years now. I have done much study on this subject of natural healing and supplments. Considering that Dr. Whitaker is one of the most respected advocates of natural healing, and having come from a traditional medical background, I am a more than willing promoter of the cause. The real beauty of his passion is that he really practices what he preaches. The Whitaker Wellness Institute in Newport Beach, CA is on my to-do list. I invite you to check out the site if you are interested in this subject.

I have written to my Senator and Congressman in support of proposed legislation to prohibit the FDA from getting away with their plan. Feel free to do the same.

I have a few more posts along this vein but they will be done in divided doses.

Take care, be healthy, and keep the government out of your affairs!

Til next time….

Today's Apocalypse Sign: My Thanks

I don't know if this has ever been done before but frankly I don't care. I was certain I should have gone back and unpublished my last post after I slept on it, convinced it was too whiny and pitiful. But in true procrastination form, I let it stand. Then I waited until today to respond to comments, amazed that the number grew from 6 then 9 then 12 then 16. When I started reading through them I was intrigued to find a few who have not commented in a while, one who commented twice (she might need therapy), one insane blogger (not news to anyone), and a new reader/follower. I found supportive thoughts and well wishes for my pup. It felt like meeting friends at the coffee shop for a quick chat.

I opened Notepad and began responding to each comment. Sometimes laughing out loud and sometimes feeling the sincere thoughts that were there. Something I never know is whether or not anyone ever comes back and reads comment comments. To that end I decided to post my replies not only in the post itself but actually create a post of all my responses. If you commented then you will get your response (if not go back and read what you wrote). If you are reading this and did not comment on last weeks post then none of this will make much sense and you may want to read the Friday post first. At least everyone will get something. Or not.

Here are my replies to your comments from WTF.

Robyn: I am sure I'm not tapped out and that thought keeps me going. The following and commenting are not really big ego things for me but they are kind of nice. That picture cracked me up again as I opened the page tonight. Thanks Robyn.

Alex: I have no plans to give up. Making 320 posts convinces me daily I can continue. Plus I have a seen several bloggers I have followed bow out for different reasons or take long breaks and I truly miss reading their posts. Thanks for your support.

TS: It counts for a lot really. Your's is one site I read daily even if I don't always comment, because I enjoy it. Thanks for the comment.

Manzanita: Just picturing kids running around with duct taped coats makes me laugh. You are so right about time...it moves so fast now. Thanks for stopping by.

RaShelle: I know people who might actually do that to a baby! I am working on de-funking daily. Thanks for the kind words.

Cowgirl: It was good news about the tumor on his lip and he is doing sportingly (that's an English term right?). I'll stop and check out the challenge but I hope I don't get eaten by your blob! I know you meant blog but I found it funny nevertheless. Thanks.

Geek: At least now you know one way to keep Baby Badass out of harms way! Just kidding...duct tape can't hold the BB. Caesar is doing great, thanks.

Esther: Consider me cheered up up...but what exactly were my "wonderful and thoughtful essays"? I didn't know I had ever done both in one sitting! Thanks for the encouragement!

Lee: Now THAT made me laugh! The trip to Fiji is sadly becoming a distant memory. Just three short months later. Trips like that shouldn't do that. You should be able to record a vacation and then re-experience it in a virtual way...sights and sounds. You know, like that Schwartzenegger movie I can't remember.  Now there is an invention I could buy into! Taking the weekend off...maybe I'll work on that. Thanks Lee.

Candida: The kind of parents that have duct tape and a plan...and few scruples. Thanks for stopping by and come back whenever you like. I promise I will actually be posting stuff soon. Caesar is well and fighting with his younger sister constantly now. Stitches come out Monday.

Manzanita (2): I had a serious vacation back in June which if you missed the adventure you can catch the page at the top of the blog entitled Fiji Diary. Now I need a less serious vacation...or just a couple days off! I will stop by your blog as I LOVE surprises! Thanks for TWO COMMENTS on this post!! You the Duck!!

Pat: Buddy, I was so surprised to see that dedicated photo...I showed my wife and she just thought it was so funny. Bostons are soooo entertaining! Glad you liked WallBoy! Thanks for all the support you've been over the last couple years. It is appreciated every day.

Copyboy: Truth be told I suspect there are 20 or 30 that haven't read in a while. I have no proof but the serious contrast between me and them (sites that is) suggests this. I am cool with it. The ones that matter most is this group in this post. BTW I heard that it is actually 5 posts before they jump off the bridge. Just so you know.

Misha: I like that...Blogger error. I am feeling better already, since it could actually be true! Bastards! Caesar is back in true lunatic form. He gets all his toys back on Monday after the stitches come out so he and Cornelia will be seriously back at it then. Thanks, Misha.

D22 Zone: Well looky here...a sparkling new reader. Who says karma isn't real. Welcome. Not sure where you popped in from but I am glad you're here. Feel free to browse.

Thank you my friends you are all appreciated!

BTW...I am a little pissed at the FDA right now so be prepared for a rant very soon...stay tuned!

Today's Apocalypse Sign: WTF

WTF!! Yeah, some people really shouldn't be parents. Duct Tape use No. 1001

That is almost all I got...WTF. I appear to be in both a creative and who-cares funk. I haven't written a really meaningful post in almost 2 months (some would say ever). I even stopped short of finishing my Fiji diary by two days. After 320 posts I have hit some kind of wall.

When I read posts every day from people who I believe are just as busy if not busier than I am, I have to stop and wonder for a moment. The drain of working long hours, lots of days,  and the oppressive heat (even though I work indoors) seems to have put me in the doldrums. Even the Green Bay Packers win last night wore off before I got to work today. And I usually can ride that for an entire week!

The lowest point is when I opened my blog a week or so ago and found the Followers count DECREASED by 2. Even the Weekend Graphs couldn't keep 'em interested. I know I am sort of the odd man out among a largely writer and photography based following. I have great interest in both subjects but seriously lack the motivation to get serious. And while I thoroughly enjoy reading many of the writing tips that are offered on many of the sites I follow...I find myself staying not only out of the deep end but the pool entirely.

Now that my summer madness has begun to subside both in temperature and at work, I feel that now is the time to re-evaluate how I want to proceed. There are 468 days left according to the Mayan calendar on my side bar...I have blogged well in excess of that to this point (starting date: January 16th, 2010). It is the going forward I have to create.

This was understandably quite rambling but there it is.

For tonight, my Boston Terrier, Caesar, had a melanoma tumor removed from his lip today and is in need of my attention.

Today's Apocalypse Sign: Labor Day Weekend Graphs

Or for those in Canada who don't know what Labor Day is...Labour Day Weekend Graphs. Another grueling summer has come to an end. There will be a Telethon or two going on. Shrimp or other meat stuffs will be on the barbie. College football kicks off. And the Weekend Graphs are here to add to your three-day weekend merriment!

Since it is a three-day weekend I have included a bonus 6th graph sure to make you pee your pants (you'll laugh at that too once you see it). Without further delay, gather round and share with your friends and family.

Stay safe, don't drink and drive, and enjoy!

Today's Apocalypse Sign: Are They Dead or Do They Just Look That Way?

Paul Newman Dead - at 83

This is a semi-morbid post (for some people) and a curiosity of mine.

Why is it so hard to remember if famous people are dead or alive? I randomly wonder, "Hey, is so-an-so still alive?" Some I can remember easily, some give me pause, and some I just can't ever get right. Hopefully this is not some early onset dementia symptom. Just to test that theory, can you get all these right? Answers not included...

Jerry Lewis

Kirk Douglas

Jimmy Carter (ex-prez)

Chuck Norris (just kidding, death cannot kick Chuck Norris' ass!)

Dick Van Dyke

Mary Tyler Moore

Marlo Thomas

Wilfred Brimley

Malcolm McDowell

Robert Redford

Elizabeth Montgomery

Lindsay Lohan ( wha- what??)

David Cassidy

Kris Kristofferson

I know there are others I think this of when I here their name mentioned but you get the idea. Is this a good dead pool list?

Does this ever happen to you?  Do you have any names to add?
