LSD-25

Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (acid))
LSD. The holy grail of spiritual awakening in the counter-culture days of the late 60's. And on the plus side, almost non-existent addictivity!  The name however conjures up thoughts of drinking from a car battery or some other equally horrific "acid" source. When most times it is a small drop of liquid (tasteless) on absorbent paper (blotter) that is put under the tongue to dissolve. So I've been told.

Hence the term "blotter acid".

LSD causes different reactions in different people but many report intensified awareness. Altered visual effects (the melting wall or rippling carpet). Some get very intensely "into" something, quite often music. Some see imaginary things as products of their own mind. For those not mentally unstable or damaged to begin with, it is an awakening. So I have been told.

This appears to have been one of Hunter's favorite sources of recreation and inspiration. To what degree it's hard to say. When he states in Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas that among other drugs, he had a large number of sheets of high quality blotter acid it gives the impression he lived on it. Sadly another chief effect of LSD is the quick build up of a tolerance to its mind-expanding effects. Taking it more than a couple times a week greatly diminishes the result. So I have been told.

Acid has been a largely misunderstood drug from the 60's primarily due to the government testing soldiers with it for mind control possibilities. LSD has been used to treat alcoholism and in psychotherapy treatments.

Now how about this? In Switzerland from 2008 - 2011 they have been experimenting with end of life anxiety treatment using LSD for terminally-ill patients. Results are promising and no negative results have been reported. Really? And who would have done this reporting...the dead?

Flash backs have really been non-existent and are more of an urban legend. No record of anyone ever dying of an Acid OD has been found and tests show there are no long-term physiological effects on the brain or the rest of the body.

I will say this, if this were available in the US for easing anxiety for terminal illness...count me in.

Timothy Leary was an American psychologist who became famous for his research on LSD. But a play on his name also became common in the 1960s — "Be leery of LSD."

I know that all medications have secondary effects to them. If LSD were to become legal, I would do a lot more reading about it before I tried it. If I wanted to try it. Big "IF."

Still not something I would ever want to try.

Very interesting. I don't know much about LSD, but that Switzerland research sounds fascinating.

Hope you're enjoying the challenge.

Good topic. I am an advocate. I've tried it and like many aspects of it. The main problem with street acid is the additives which can have unpleasant side effects. I'd love to try the pure clinical stuff. I think the drug has great potential as a useful mind opener.
I haven't tried it in many years, but I'd be afraid to use what's out on the street now.

Rob: You would have to be careful where you got it but the good stuff was, well...good stuff.

Alex: Totally understand. Not advocating just informing.

Cheryl: Thanks and I appreciate you stopping by.

Lee: Yes on all counts. The one thing you have to beware of is the junk with speed in it. Somewhat ruins the effect not to mention the increase in paranoia. Thanks.

Yes the speed is a big problem. Keeps you up much longer than you want to be and messes with your head and body in unpleasant ways. That's why I stopped using it in 1974 or so. Last tried some in 1992 and it was much cleaner with no speed and it was sublime.

They should legalize it and keep FDA approved or whatever they would do.

By the end of ones life, what has one got to lose? You do whatever works.

It's funny that they want to start using it on the terminally ill. I would hate to be more aware my death was coming soon.

I know you didn't intend it to be funny, but I loved that line- "who would have reported the negative after effects? The dead."
That's the problem with testing anything in this manner.

Great, and very balanced post.

Lee: The blotter always seemed to be the most tainted...the liquid on the sugar cube was always much cleaner.

Joyce: Knowing what I know, I would definitely do it!

Clarissa: That is a possibility but the more likely would be the distraction it would provide. I would do it.

Natasha: Oh I absolutely intended to be funny!! That statement struck me that way right of the bat.

Yes, lysergic acid diethylamide is a myth! I never got to try it.

I did try it about 20+ years ago & it was one of the most horrendous experiences of my life. But then, I hate anything with an amphetamine-type reaction. Stay very far away! Evil drug!!!

Hi Chuck .. well some interesting facts here - I'm just so glad it's something I never got 'trapped into' .. but the experiments give an added dimension to 'helping' passing on - the pain is the thing isn't it .. having seen my mother and uncle die recently - one without pain and one with, which was managed ... I don't have a fear of dying any more .. it's a change in my approach to life ..

Cheers Hilary

Leovi: I am pretty sure it was real :)

Nancy: The bad stuff had the speed in it that really made people freak out. The good stuff was rather enlightening. Good Stuff + 2001 Space Odessey = a good experience.

Hilary: Sorry you had to go through that to become more enlightened yourself. But I am glad you don't have the Fear.
