Bill Murray

Today's B post is all about the A-list comedian/actor that is Bill Murray. One of my all time favorite actors and a true comedic genius.

The first time I came to know Bill Murray was like many others out there...the true heyday of Saturday Night Live (SNL). Every skit that he was in was a raging success and along with Dan Akroyd and John Belushi, made the show a cult hit. For three seasons he was my impetus for watching.  And when he left, I was quite bummed.

However it did not take long for him to earn a new place in my viewing.

To begin his run of movies for me was his portrayal  of Hunter S. Thompson in what is my favorite movie, Where The Buffalo Roam.  This movie was not critically accepted and to that I simply say (in true Thompson fashion), "Balls". There is no doubt after watching the Gonzo documentary of HST's life, that Murray was and always will be the quintessential Thompson character. The mannerisms, voice, speech inflection, and the eerie physical similarities are truly remarkable. I advise anyone who has never seen this movie to give a view...or several. As well as the documentary.

Obviously CaddyshackGhostbusters, Stripes, What About Bob, and Groundhog Day are all classic Murray comedy performances.

Rushmore, Lost In Translation and Broken Flowers were all critically acclaimed films and LIT garnered numerous award nominations including a Best Actor Academy Award bid (he lost that year to Sean Penn for Mystic River).

His only attempt at directing was the movie Quick Change which I actually liked a lot. Starring Murray, Geena Davis, Randy Quaid, Jason Robards, Stanley Tucci, Phil Hartman and Tony Shaloub...not too shabby a cast, and a hilarious story. Didn't make a lot of money but again, I liked it.

His latest film, Hyde Park On Hudson, where he portrays FDR during a critical time of WWII, is on my list of next to watch.

Then I am going back to the beginning and watch each one of his films that I have never seen. Movie Mission for 2013.

One quirky fact, Murray has never had an agent or a manager and only fields offers for scripts and roles using a voicemail set up on a personal phone number. He doesn't check it very frequently and even after auditioning for several roles, he missed many opportunities because he never checked the VM. Two of those roles being Willie Wonka in Charlie and The Chocolate Factory (this prize role went to Johnny Depp, ironically*) as well as Eddie Valiant in Who Framed Roger Rabbit (Bob Hoskins got the role after Harrison Ford wanted too much money).

*ironically = Johnny Depp played Hunter S. Thompson in Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas and reprised the role in the HST Rum Diary film (both books were infinitely better than the movies to me). So I guess there is one degree of separation between Murray and Depp, for what it matters.

Outside of show business, Murray is a fixture at many sports events and dabbles in ownership of some minor league teams. He is probably known most famously for his appearances in some outrageous get-ups at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am golf event every year. And two years ago he and his pro partner D. A. Points actually won the pro-am.  This year after a bad shot near a sand trap he flopped into the bunker on his back and proceeded to make a "sand angel" much to the delight of the gallery.

Bill Murray, really one of my favorite guys and one I would choose to hang out with and have a few beers.

Because it still hasn't gotten weird enough for me...

I believe he also played himself in Zombieland. Hilarious. You're right, very funny man and all round cool guy (check my blog on "P" - you'll love it!)

Bill Murray is hilarious.
You just have to look at him and you're laughing.
I know it's probably a cliche but Groundhog Day and Scrooged have to be my faves.

Ah, Groundhog Day - I could watch it repeatedly..... ;-p

Bill Murray's a good choice - I approve! ;-)

(and thanks for calling in at IRTGQ, Chuck - I'm getting quite a few 'skeletons' out of the closet with this year's A-Z! ;-p)

Another great performance was Scrooged, my other half's fave Christmas film. He would have made a super laconic Willy Wonka...

Fear and Loathing and The Rum Diary weer great books. Fear and Loathing was also a great movie but The Rum Diary fell short.

I still haven't gotten around to seeing Where the Buffalo Roam. I am going to make that a priority now.

He missed some parts because he didn't check his voice mail. Sounds like something I would do.
He was awesome in Zombieland, even if he did wind up dead.

I have never heard of anyone making it in show biz without a manager or agent AND only fielding offers on Voicemail. I suppose that his phenomenal success on SNL made it possible. I never would have thought there was only degree of separation between Bill Murray and Johnny Depp. Strange. That blows my mind more than any other part of this post.

Bill Murray is a good blog choice. There's a lot to say about him, since he's versatile and talented. I loved Lost in Translation, one of the best things I've seen him in since SNL.

I enjoy many of Murry's films. Funny that he doesn't check his messages more often. Guess he doesn't need the roles.

Wizzard: I loved Zombieland for many reasons not least of which was Murray playing himself. I will be sure to check you P...post that is.

Duncan: I have no doubt it was. I missed that tournament so I only saw a still of it. Priceless.

Jeremy: There are so many people (including my wife) that just don't get the style of his humor. And his serious acting is not to shabby either.

Ficticious: Groundhog Day was one I have watched many times...very cool his brother is in the movie too.

Sue: Nice play there on Groundhog Day :) Thanks for your approval.

Nick: I would have loved to see him play Willy Wonka, I think it would have been terrific.

PTM: You need to watch at least three times...in different states of mind. That'll fix you right up.

Alex: It is amazing the way he takes parts. Zombieland was a fun flick.

Robin: I am glad you enjoyed it. He and Depp actually made a movie together...Ed Wood.

Jan: I didn't realize how good Lost was until I had seen it a couple times. Sad he did win the award for it.

M PAx: I laugh just thinking of What About Bob. Murray and Dreyfus were a great comic duo in that one.

Nancy: "Cinderella story...from the back of the pack"...most of his lines and action in this movie were improv on the set.You are sooo funny;)

Queen: I am glad you liked the post and thnaks for stopping by.

Yvonne: Thank you very much. Those are kind words to my frantic mind.

Mary: He picks and chooses what he wants. What a better way to go through the rigors of an acting career.

Leovi: Agreed on both counts!

Monti: I am quite a fan, thank you for noticing. I have to come see your painting today.

Geoff: Classic line to be sure. I take it you enjoy the occasional dip on the weird side of thinking? Thanks for stopping by.

Have you ever seen The Man Who Knew Too Little?

Chuck said...

Michelle: thanks. Here is to some fortuitous stumbling...

Clarissa: I have not seen it. On my list and in my Blockbuster queue. Thanks.

A cool guy all right. I loved finding out that he didn't have an agent, and sometimes lost out on roles because he didn't check his answering machine. Shows he was more than just the sum of his fame.

Chuck said...

Natasha: He is truly more than the sum of his fame. Thanks.

I loved Lost in Translation - and incidentally, Mystic River was a great movie as well. ;) But anyway, I think Bill Murray is a great actor!

I generally like his work, although I admit, I haven't seen a lot of those movies. I think that I like Ghostbusters the best.

Love this B post! Murray is pretty much great in everything, but I'd say my favorites are Rushmore and Lost in Translation.

Groundhog Day is a big favorite of mine, but I think I like The Man Who Knew Too Little best of all. I wrote about that one on my "J" post about Juggling Films.
