Today's Apocalypse Sign: J Is For Japan

Today the letter J can only be for Japan.

This tiny country is being ravaged by what seems to be never ending after shocks (i.e. earthquakes) since the major tsunami-inducing quake a month ago. Thursday spawned another large 7.4 magnitude earthquake in northern Japan. The pictures of the wide-spread disaster makes me wonder if this great society will be rebuilt in our lifetime.

There is an estimated 26,000 dead (12,000 confirmed and 14,000 missing and presumed dead). The Fukushima nuclear plant continues to be at a critical stage. It is leaking into the ocean and the atmosphere where future damage is unclear. But radiation is never good.

I know my blogger friend Pat Tillett and his wife have close ties with her family in Japan and I hope and pray that they are all okay. See his post on Japan.

There really is nothing else to say but that this needs to end soon. The earth has really ben rearranging itself quite a lot recently. Were the Myans right?

Thanks for doing such a relevant post, especially since the world's attention seems to have moved on from Japan.

The continuing devastation that seems to be stiking repeatedly at Japan is a worrying feature of what is happening to this planet.
Added to the 'natural' disaster there is also the risk of radiation problems that will cause untold grief well into the next generations and beyond.

Around the globe this last few years we have seen more and more weather-related issues - forest fires running out of control, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes and tsunami - this li'l planet is creaking at the seams!

I wonder what's coming next? :-o

Robyn: Just when you think the world has moved on you hear about the Chernobyl-like conditions and more massive aftershocks. It is a true tragedy.

Sue: Mayans say in 618 days...the end.

Thanks for having my wife's family in your thoughts Chuck. I truly do appreciate it. It seems they are getting so used to these earthquakes (or aftershocks) that they barely even react to them now. What would send us running outside, doesn't even cause them to get out of bed now. It's a scary situation there and I feel very bad the amercian news can only seem to now concentrate on the issues in the Libya. Not even really on the issues, but on the political ramifications of it in the US.
On a side note, we have a nuclear powerplant about 20 miles down the coast from here and now I think about the damn thing everyday...
Hope you're having a good week!

Pat: I am sure it is a strain everyday and I'm sorry you're having to go through it. We have a nuclear plant about 15 miles from my lake house south of Ft Worth. I think of it quite often. Hope all gets better for ya.
