Top Ten Movie Countdown...Part Deux

Well the time is here to round up another ten of my top movies. I purposefully did NOT go back and review my submission for Alex's last blogfest on this subject. So there my be a couple dupes but you will only know that if you are of the Poirot or Marple mentality. Let's say you're not and leave it at that.

I will tell you this, I know right now my #1 movie will NOT change so be that as it may for better or worse.

Right. Let's go then.

#10 - True Grit

The Jeff Bridges version not John Wayne. I love all the Coen brothers movies and this one was no exception. All-star cast and a scene stealing young lady bent on revenge. The writing and action are great and Bridges should have won Best Actor. Nominated for 10 Academy awards and winning ZERO??? When does that happen. Academy bastards! Great movie.

Another all-star cast and a coup for Tarantino. This movie was so far out there when it first came out many people couldn't follow it. I loved it from the first viewing. Weird huh? Anyway, the movie has produced numerous quotes that I use from time to time, favorite being, "Zed is dead, baby...Zed is dead." Don't ask me how or when I use it but just trust me it is always appropriate.

A lot of people I know who saw this movie said it was slow and boring. Pfft, what do they know. This film to me was a stunning performance by Daniel Day-Lewis who deserves every acting award he wins. His portrayal of an oil tycoon in the making, was just fantastic. His vicious and mainly manipulating ways of getting what he wanted while trying (so it appears) to reconcile with his supposed son and scamming fake brother made the movie. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Set in my home state of Ohio, the dark cult classic has been a favorite of my for some time. The litmus test for that is how often I quote from the movie. This one is frequently, probably daily or so. Staring Christian Slater and Winona Ryder, this hilarious story of high school cliques and what today would be called bullying is just the ticket for me. If you have never seen I strongly advise at least one viewing before you die...maybe two if you don't get it the first time. Soon you will be humming the catchy refrain from the movie's hit song, "Teenage Suicide, Don't Do It" by Big Fun. I am laughing now as I type this.

#6 - Seven

I liked this movie a lot based on the fact that it would be theoretically and even actually, impossible for Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt and Kevin Spacey to make a bad movie together. Besides most of the film being a disgusting revelation of a serial killer acting out the seven deadly sins...it is the way and the why and then the justification at the end that is just so good. These are three of my favorite actors and I would watch them paint a box through the wrong end of binoculars...and pay for it. Poor Gwyneth.

This movie scared the shit out of me. I only ever saw it one time...the year it came out...at a drive in. Holy hell, nothing like that had ever been on the screen before. The film rating society debated over whether to rate it X or not for a while. This was the first horror film to be nominated for Best Picture (losing to The Sting). It is always in the top 2 or 3 scariest movies moments when those things are voted on. And as much as it gives me pause to do so...I give you the picture that still freaks me out today. But just a small one.

#4 - 2001: A Space Odyssey

This was a movie that depending on when you saw it ran either 160 minutes or 140 minutes. It was a film way out there but then again that was sort of the trip Kubrick was on back in the day. Clockwork Orange seems to seal the deal on that thought. 2001 was the first movie I saw in an "altered state". If you have seen it then you know why it is necessary to do this once in your life. It was intense and surreal to the extreme. Some parts of it still to this day make no sense to me. But if anyone ever says, "open the pod bay door, HAL"...you will know they are one. But if they say, "I'm sorry Dave, I can't do that"...well, then you have no hope. For super cool bonus points, what was the song that HAL broke into as Dave slowly removed his "brain"?

#3 - Bad Santa

Billy Bob Thornton and Tony Cox are a hilarious conman team and drunken comedic thieves. Billy Bob plays Santa and Cox is his elf. Bernie Mac is his normally funny self (RIP Bernie). Heather Graham is the "naughty" girl in the film and Cloris Leachman is great in an uncredited role as Granny. Favorite line from this movie, "that's some lip you got on you, midget." If you are not adverse to some raw language this movie crediting the Coen Bros as "executive producers" will split your sides. WARNING: DO NOT attempt to eat popcorn while watching this film...it will result in the Heimlich maneuver being applied! One of my favorite Christmas films.

#2 - The Big Lebowski

This one made the list last time and will always be on my Top Ten list...fighting hard to overcome my nostalgia and reach number 1. This movie is as hilarious as it gets. Bridges as the Dude is the only one who could play this role. Casting by the Coen's is probably second only to their scripting as pure genius in all their movies. The lines and quotes from this movie are priceless and endless. Go watch it right now if you have never seen. It will cure what ails ya.

#1 - Where The Buffalo Roam

Argue it all you will, Murray's portrayal of the gonzo journalist Hunter Thompson is the best bar none. I give Depp his props as an actor, but Murray owns Thompson. It hit home like a 30-lb sledge hammer going through a concrete wall, when I saw the bio-documentary on Hunter S. Thompson. The look, voice, mannerisms...of HST, well you could have closed your eyes and it WAS Murray. Very eerie.

If you have never seen this movie and are any kind of fan of the late "king of gonzo" you owe it to yourself to wrap your head around this.

This movie will always be my number one.

And there you have it, the current Top Ten Movies as rated by this here blogger. I hope you take time and view some you have not seen. I will be stopping by your sites throughout this week to check out my fellow blogger's lists.

Oh yeah...Honorable Mention

Oh Brother Where Art Thou

Seven! No, don't open the box! That was a good movie. And the Exorcist, classic. Need to go see the Big Lebowski though.

You like the quirky films! The Big Lebowski is hilarious. And you're right - Academy bastards!
Thanks for participating in my blogfest - again.

I've never actually seen There Will Be Blood, but I enjoyed the rest of the films on your list.

I referenced Heathers in a teachers' meeting one afternoon and was sadly the only one in attendance who had seen it.

Manzanita said...

I've seen most on your list. Not the Big Lebowski. Always meant to and now you've renewed my interest.
That Santa one of Billy Bob T. is really a choker. Good choice of films.

LOVE Heathers, and became a fan of The Big Lebowski through my teenage son! :-)

We shared quite a few faves such as - True Grit, and I noticed a few I missed off my list - such as Heathers!

Fab list.

Oh Heathers! There's one I haven't thought of in a while. I remember it well though, great choice.

After I watched The Exorcist I had nightmares for-stinking-ever! Wish I never watched it. But I can see where horror fans would love it.

Heathers? Really? I'm both surprised and impressed!! One of my all time favorite movies too and responsible for my high school crush on Christian Slater. I'm guessing that probably wasn't a side effect of the movie for you :)

Bad Santa? really? That has to be one of the quirkiest choices I've seen yet ~ *grins*

Great choices here! I especially love how True Grit was remade. :)

I really have to check out True Grit. I hear it's a great film.

Se7en is one of my favorites. So dark, gritty, shocking. And Heathers, oh wow, always loved that one, too.

The Exorcist scared the crap out of me too!

I watched it nearly a decade ago... and have never seen it since!

I think you are the only person I've seen so far to have a horror listed as a favorite, kudos to you! I haven't seen Heathers in years.

Pat Tillett said...

Hey Chuck! I LOVE almost all of these movies and will comment on a few of them.
True Grit: You are right about Jeff Bridges getting robbed in this one. He was amazing. I can hear that voice of his even as I write this.

Pulp Fiction: One of my absolute favorites. I'm not a Travolta fan at all, but even he was great in it. The dialogue was amazing. I have no idea how many times I've seen this movie, but it's a lot.

There Will Be Blood: It was slow, it was dark, it was awesome!

Seven: I totally agree with on this one. They are also three of my favorites.

Exorcist: Oh yeah! I'm not easily scared and this one also scared me. Not too many movies caused this much of a stir when it was released. People were walking out of the theater! Not because they didn't like it, but because it was so damn scary!

2001: I also saw this in a "very altered state" and was amazed, confused and loved it. I don't know the exact name of the song, but it had something to do with Daisies I think.

Where the Buffalo Roam: Loved this one! I read the books a LONG time ago and when I heard that movies were made, I wondered if they could pull the character off. I liked both Depp and Murray as Hunter Thompson. I also LOVED Benecio Del Toro as Dr. Gonzo!

The Big Lebowski: You already know how I feel about this one. Jeff Bridges was brilliant! The Dude abides...

The Big Lebowski would of make my list if I was allowed one more. It was tough not to have it on my list. I recently watched 2001 and thought it was terrible. I loved the book but couldn't watch the movie.

I need to watch True Grit again. I saw it in the theater but haven't seen it since.

Pat Tillett said...

I forgot about Brother Where Art Thou. This movie should have been a HUGE hit. It also should have won a few Oscars. Great acting, great script, great music and AMAZING cinematography. I was very surprised that people I knew didn't like it. I LOVED it. Okay, this time I'm really done...

Elise: Thanks for stopping by. Pitt’s baleful, “what’s in the boooox” well, you knew he knew. Yes, see the BL I would not steer you wrong.

Alex: Great blogfest as usual, sir. Yes I do like the quirky, just ask my wife!

Jeremy: I first saw it at a Midnight Movie with three friends. We were a little “toasty” and laughed riotously throughout. I can still remember that, so that’s good.

MJ: I know, Heathers has such great lines and I run into almost no one who has seen it so my attempts at humor referencing it make me sound deranged. Ah, who cares. Glad you stopped by.

Manzanita: Yes please watch the Big Lebowski…if you have seen Bad Santa then the language in the BL won’t shock you!

Mina: Kudos on the Heathers fanship…little scary that your teenager turned you on to the BL…don’t think it really teaches appropriate behavior or language, but what the hell…it’s damn funny. Thanks for visiting.

Shah: True Grit was just awesome in the theatre. I haven’t seen it again yet because I had a real hard time with the horse-riding scene at the end that just looked cruel…but I am soft that way for animals. Thanks from dropping in.

Jaybird: So tell me, does this make Heathers a chick-flick…since mostly women are commenting they have seen it? Or are the guys just not fessing up? We share the same view on the Exorcist.

Johanna: I’ll go with Impressed for two hundred Alex!! I loved Winona Ryder even more after that film.

Tami: Does that mean you liked the movie??

David: You know something; I have never seen the John Wayne version. Everyone I talk to about the movie says the new version is better and truer to the book…which I also have not read. Thanks for coming over.

Nutschell: It is great. And your name is one of my favorite Alice In Chains Songs…imagine that!

Nancy: After last years connection with AIC during the A-Z, why would it be any different in the movies. I must go see your list…

Matthew: Thanks Matt! I must go see what you rated as Top Ten material.

Chippy: Then you know how I feel. It really kept me awake for a few nights afterward. Seeing at a drive in was extra creepy.

Elsie: Just had to give props to a movie that achieved it purpose without campiness or the CGI stuff. Thanks!

Pat: I will be impressed if anyone gets the 2001 song…and you were damn close…It was Bicycle Built For Two, which of course starts out with the lyric, “Daisy, Daisy give me your answer do, I’m half cra-zy, all for the love of you.” Odd that I know that song with out looking up the lyrics. Long term memory…unaffected by the “altered state”. Score one for Dr. Leary. Ha!

You hit them all on the head.

For Thompson, you have to watch the documentary I linked to, it is so good.

I have about 10 versions of Man Of Constant Sorrow on my iPod.

PTM: Hey who let the riff-raff in the theatre! Just kidding’ thanks for stopping by man. When’s the baby due?

Bad Santa is hilarious! Wifey and I rent it every year. Maybe we should just buy it.

I had no idea Where the Buffalo Roam even existed, but now want to check it out. Also, Heathers! I forgot that movie on my list! At the very least in my honorable mentions. And Seven and Exorcist are such good movies. Definitely some of my faves.

What a combination of films. So you liked the newer version of True Grit over John Wayne's? Personally, I think he got the academy award more as a career tribute than for that role.

Unknown said...

There are some wild and wacky movies on your list. I like it!

Chuck said...

Stephen: Yes, I would recommend the buy method of watching this movie. Just knowing you have it is peace of mind.

Robyn: Thanks! I am a fun mixed bag kinda guy...

Lee: Good call. Writing about 2001 gave me a craving to see it again as well.

Brett: Good company with those flicks. Glad your daughter enjoyed Heathers. You'll enjoy the frenzy of the A-Z if this is your first year...get your first two weeks worth of posts done early a schedule them, best advice I can give you. Looking forward to seeing you then.

Shannon: Like kindred spirits we are...I would really love to hear your take on Buffalo after you have watched twice.

Donna: I have never actually seen the John Wayne movie or at least not all of it. Maybe that helped me when watching this new remade version.

Clarissa: Thanks...I guess I am a wild and wacky guy!!

The only ones I've seen are:

#7 - Heathers
#6 - Seven
#2 - The Big Lebowski

I can't really remember Heathers but I remember it being classic for my generation, which means I'm pretty sad to not remember it. haha. LOVE the other two up there, especially Lebowski. Such a classic.

Excellent list. I was lucky enough to see 2001 at the cinema (in, er, 2001). A trip indeed, sorry I can't answer your question though... and I only know Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas not Where the Buffalo Roam. I'll have to check it out.

Chuck said...

Trisha: Well then you will just have to go watch Heathers again! It's that good. Thanks for stopping by.

Tammy: Welcome aboard and I will stop by to see your soon.

Leovi: Your art reminds me so much of that movie. Thanks.

Clarissa: Always.

Nick: For sure check it out. The answer to the question is "Bicycle Built For Two".

Wow - so many of those I've not seen. I feel slightly ashamed of myself. O Brother Where Art Thou is a fantastic movie though.

Pulp Fiction also liked a lot.

The truth is that Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the best.

I have to admit that I haven't seen most of the movies on your list. I'll be adding those to my ever growing "to watch" list. :3

Hootin Anni said...

Of your movies listed, I only recall seeing THREE...Bad Santa, There Will Be Blood and True Grit. I liked John Wayne's True Grit better, Bad Santa...the "F" word way too often in the movie to even enjoy the story and that leaves me with There Will Be Blood...I liked that one.

As for the camera, I packed the box away already that it came in, and the camera is in the trunk of the car as I type, but I think it was Nikon P150 [mine has no detachable lens tho]...tell your wife, I've very pleased with it!! Very much so. Anything Nikon has my vote. More features than Canon.

Leovi said...

Very interesting story .... Yes, I agree with you, I like the Coen brothers film.

Chuck said...

Jamie: I almost left O Brother of the post entirely...by mistake. It is a classic!

Leovi: Thanks for reading this post so many times!

Capillary: Unless you are sensitive to language (Bad Santa and Big Lebowski) you should enjoy them all.

Anni: I know but Billy Bob's character is kind of an F-word sleazy kind of guy so it fits for that.

Also, beware tht while hilarious to no end, the Big Lebowski is chock full of the F-word. However, there is a youtube video that distills the entire movie down to the scenes with F-words...it is almost 3 minutes long. After watching it you curiously don't even see it as a bad word anymore.

Thanks for the camera info!
