A Scary Fourth Of July

Some of you may remember my sweet little pup Cornelia. With her super power split-vision she can watch both sides of a room at the same time. She just turned 3 at the end of the June so what better time to traumatize her Daddy than on July fourth.

Here is a picture of Cornelia in all her cuteness... adorable right?

So after waking from my well deserved mid-morning nap on the 4th, I walked to the kitchen and turn around to see her following me...looking like,

THIS!!!

My wife had left for work an hour earlier so being the dutiful Dad...I freaked out!! You can see how much her eyelids had swelled up. She had hives starting on her back and chest. My panic was due to the breeds notorious breathing issues and figuring she had got into something outside that morning on our walk. I try and pay close attention to the fire ant mounds as those guys can take down a horse given the time. (My other Boston, Caesar, likes to eat the mounds...story for another day). I am thinking her throat is going to start closing and I have only a short time to get her to the vet...who is closed because of the holiday...arghhhhhh!!!!!! I call my wife and do the verbal version of running around in circles. She tells me to shut up and get in the car and get going.

Finally I get her down to the car and we are headed to the animal emergency hospital about 15 minutes away. Now this is causing even more anxiety for me because it was I who rushed our 13-yr old Boston to this same building on New Years Eve 2007 and he passed away that night. It was devastating. So I am driving, and freaking, and petting Cornelia as she sat in the passenger seat. Thankfully she was very active and wanted to explore all over the new car (didn't happen). But at least she was breathing okay...she just looked like she had gone 15 rounds with Mike Tyson. And she was looking out the window at everyone when we stopped at a light. Nice. Probably gave everyone the impression I bred fighting dogs or something.

We get to the hospital and they take her in. The picture above is in the pre-exam room. The doc comes in and examines her and takes her back to the treatment area. A little while later she comes back and said they had given Cornelia a shot of Benadryl and a steroid shot. They wanted to keep her for the next 4 hours to watch for any respiratory problems. So I left to wait.

My wife got off work at 3 on the 4th and we headed over to pick Cornelia up around 4 PM. By then the swelling in her face was gone but the hives on her belly and back remained. These shots are AFTER we got home...

The hives on her back actually got worse after we got home and we gave her another dose of store bought Benadryl before going to bed.

Sleep is a wonderful thing. The next morning I pulled back the covers to find...a pile of puke!!! Cornelia had thrown up all the food from the previous night. Good news....she was all better and not a hive left on her!

Hope you all had a happy and puke-free 4th!

Hi Chuck .. you're the second blogger to post about their dog and hives - mine had hives in South Africa - probably from a stinging insect .. as we had masses of fallen nectarines and hadn't got to clear them up ..

I hope Cornelia is now well recovered .. hives are really 'horrid' - I get them .. but don't scratch and they seem to go away ...

However I know the horror of looking at an animal in distress - dealing with the puke wasn't fun .. but at least she's better ..

And I guess you've all had a good night's sleep! Delighted all is well ...

Cheers Hilary

I'm glad she's better now, Chuck. I used to hate it when my dogs were ever ill - you tend to panic and over-think the worst-case-scenario.

We have that to look forward to later this year - after saying 'never again' when we lost our last canine buddy three years ago, we're planning to trawl round the local rescue centres......I shall probably want to bring them ALL home! ;-p

Good thing you wife was the voice of reason. Poor Cornelia. Hives are not fun. Glad she's all right. Sorry about the barf. You must've been out to sleep through that.

My holiday went well. Hard not to with a cute little tyke in tow.

I'm glad your and Cornelia's rough 4th turned around overnight, and you just had to clean up puke in the morning like all the younger partiers out there.

oh man, that is scary stuff. I worry about my dogs all the time. They are not built for battles like that. I'm glad everything turned out ok. He does have really cool eyes. He's got a Jack Elam thing going on.

Hello there Chuck!!! Long time no see. Well, I posted a post this morning talking about my woes of this dang addiction called 'computer'. I jinxed it all after I posted the computer was working well...after about 30 minutes online, I had to pack up the old cable modem and have it replaced. Now it's working like a charm.

LOL

But, my goodness, my woes are NOTHING compared to what you had gone through...in fact, what y'ALL had gone through. Poor thing. She looked like she was suffering terribly. I could feel her 'stuffiness' and swelling. Ahhhhhhhh, she's such a doll! And I totally understand your anxieties with what you had gone through previously.

Glad....SO GLAD...there was a happy ending to this post. Puke and all!!

Give Cornelia a little head bump from me to her.

Now, I'm gonna go add your blog url to my blog list, so I know when you write another post. I stopped using my Google Reader since it's not reliable any longer.

Hilary: It was the freakiest thing I had experienced in a while. Took the fun out of the better part of the holiday. Thanks!

Sue: I know you'll pick a good one...just one.

Alex: Yeah I guess the day wore me out.

Nate: I'll bet you and Jr had a great 4th. Thanks for the well wishes.

700: Yes I do too. Psst...Cornelia is a she.

Anni: Glad your addiction is running smoothly again:).

She is back to being her sweet self again...except whe her brother Caesar enters the room and wants some big-time wrestling action...those two go at it like NFL Lineman!!!

Wow! Very scary...
Our pets really do rely on us for everything. It's a good thing you noticed it when you did. It's bee several days now and I trust she is totally back to normal. Did the vet have any idea idea why it happened?

Holy crap!! I'm glad she's feeling better! I would have had a heart attack!

Hugs!

Robyn: Me too!! Thanks

Pat: I totally lost it for a few minutes. Vet really didn't have any idea other than the generic Allergic Reaction. That is why they wanted to keep her for a while after the shots.

Val: Thanks...it was very traumatic.
